Recomend a camera

up till now my family has just had a good quality still film camera, it takes good pictures but its not good for skiing where u want to be able to take a million shots
could someone propose a good quality but not overly expensive digital camera?

Point and shoot are like the convenient cameras... small, and portable It fits in your pocket and you can just pull it out and snap a pic i.e.

I know that the Canon Rebel XT is pretty popular, mainly because its a cheap SLR.

I shoot Pentax and if your looking for a good camera that high quality I'd reccoment the Pentax K20D.

IMO i would recommend a XTi, one of the most dependable cameras, many lens options, very popular and easy to find accessories, cheap in terms of good class dslr's

I do not because the Canon XT was made for bigenners (sp?) and not a lot put into. I can say that the XT has many of the functions of more professional DSLR's but they are just half assed. The camera was only made for people that wanted a step up from the point and shoot. Thats why this camera can go for $450 CND with a lens.

I'm not saying "dont get this camera", I'm saying that if your going to be a bit more serious about photography then I'd suggest getting a higher level camera. Just I'd never reccomend the XT. Only to people that dont want a point and shoot but want something better to snap with.

okay well IMO i do quite a lot of photography mostly for my school newspaper but also for several companies ...i usually shoot 2-3 times a week an event, and as far as i can see the XT has done an amazing job. Now i dont have extensive use of professional dslrs like the MARK series but im sure the XT would be a great camera and MORE for this user.

As do I, I have a gallery that is in progress right now and has been for the last few months at the Whyte Museum in Banff. And I do a number of model shoots and sport shoots each month.

You are right though, this may be an alright camera for this user to get.

But I do highly reccomend Sigma glass over many other brands.

^^^well does this camera actaully have worse quality pictures than a higher level one?
thats what im really after, quality digital pictures, im not so into photography that i need to pay more money for advanced options

Correct me if I'm wrong but the XT is a 10 MP CMOS sensor which is good.

Has larger and better glass (less distortion), very durable and solid construction and because each of their lenses fit practically all DSLR's so they are VERY versitile.

i do believe though that canon's lenses(L class) are best fit although for a non-pro lens sigmas where its at...is that what your getting at?

naw I do professional photog, and use Sigma glass exept for my 40mm prime.  Again their glass is more versitile to all people.
