I seriously doubt hucking 50 footers is any different without poles. I think the difference is not in the air but on the snow.

Everybody who skis park, pipe, steeps, backcountry, moguls or even groomers without poles are complete fags!!! i don't care how good u are when u have no poles u look like a fucking retard, just like when u see a snowboarder with poles, u make fun of, same as skiers

ha i think the same when i see people with poles, freaking long sticks flying all over the place and being there for no reason, it just looks so wierd and dumb, like i cant watch a skier with poles and not be bothered by the poles going all over the place, it just looks so bad.
and look at tom wallisch, he ski's with out poles alot and he is a steeze muffin!

99% of this site doesnt have baskets wide enough on their poles to properly plant in deep powder. its all in your head.

yeah but this type of park/back country stuff is still in its beginings, give them a couple more seasons and the 50+ footers are going to be common place in these types of films

but you were hating on people who pole planted. and that is why I said some people make it look good

and I also use no poles, but I think it makes more sense to use them. I just haven't been able to use them anywhere because now I just feel restricted

i dunno, this is all a foreign concept this no pole thing, all i know is when i see someone without poles, they look retarded. i really think that pep and andy would look like better skiers when they stomp the landings and ski away if they make nice turns as opposed to trying not to bury their center mounted tips

try to tell me that hugo, shane, douglas etc. are worse skiers than the jibbers

no one is saying their worse skiers, they set bar for what it is to be a world class skier. But thats the great thing about our sport is the bar is constantly being set higher. it would be like comparing hugo, shane and douglas with the generation before them, ie scott shmit ( i know its spelled wrong) and others. Hugo, Shane, and Seth may have doing more gnarlyer things ( Backflips of huge cliffs) but that does not take away from what Scott Shmit and others did.

it would be SO much harder with rockered skis.
Without poles, maybe not so much. But still, you'd have to be completely comfortable skiing and hucking cliffs, skiing sick lines without poles.

I've used EP pros for a few hours. I dropped a 25 footer on them and I leaned just slightly back, and WHAM I got wheelie action. Took me a while to get used to the feeling of exaggerated momentum toward whichever direction you were leaning in on your landing.
Personally, I'd prefer to ski big mountain with poles, just because I am a pole planter. But whatever, if you can drop your poles, and rock the rockered skis, then it's your choice. I don't see people using rockered skis like that for big mountain very much, they seem to be more of a powder jib ski.

I don't know why, but I always feel drawn to comment in these stupid threads about poles or no poles. Um, this has nothing to do with it though, to the guy that thinks its really hard to land 50 footers on rockered skis, its not, just keep trying as I will keep trying to improve my grammar.

yes but skiing in the backcountry without poles and buttering of cliffs is not setting the bar higher. it's a deviation from the sport of big mountain skiing. if backcountry skiing is going to turn into skiing with no poles, then that sucks because it looks ugly as hell. I don't think people who just fuck around in the snow should set the bar for a world class skier, rather it should be the guys who ski gnarly ass lines in like 5 turns with sick style and form. those are the people to me that i look at and say, that's a really good skier, not some guy in XXXXXL clothing on lizzies with no poles trying to butter off a 5 foot air

Did you watch Hunting Yeti ep 2?  That cornice drop in the Whistler backcountry was massive, I'd say 50+ feet.  Pollard and Andy were zero spinning it, and Pollard sw butter 5'ed it.

big mountain when its super snowy would be fine with rocked out skis... but if it was a little harder and you had a huge exposed face... I might pick a different ski, the chatter might just kill you.
also at really fast speed you get some awesome speed wobbles. I think its exciting, you almost die!

ill pick no poles style over poled style any day, those poles flying all over the place looks so retarded, im not a big fan of pole plants either, if you like them, thats cool, but i find that when people pole plant every turn they start to look like my dad skiing powder in the 70's, i like pep and andy's smooth flowing turns which dont require poles.
and fuck a world class skier, having perfect form and doing everything as textbook as you can? that shit is for the olympics, not newschool skiing. id rather see some guy jibbing all over the place and doing nose butters off 20 footers, with no poles, being super creative, etc..., over some old guy skiing pow with perfect form like everyone else.

talking about "good form" is ironic on a site like newschoolers..its all about innovation not sticking to old school ways..

its all about having fun..if poles make your skiing better and more FUN then use them

if you dont like them, dont use them

for me using poles is no fun..especially when skiing switch

btw some people sound like they would rather have us ski perfect turns in the backcountry instead of jibbing, spinning, flipping etc. 


hmm i can do nice turns or i can straightline, jib, bonk, drop, flip, spin..etc. i dont need poles for that

plus wtf is backcountry? not all backcountry is crazy steeps with deadly drops..backcountry skiing has just as many mellow elements where you can have fun just like you do goofing off on groomers and in the park

you who say poles are essential in the backcountry aren't newschoolers or freestyle skiers....just posers..

yeah that stuff is cool and i have tons of respect for thats stuff. but ive been watching ski movies since i was like 5, and people skiing big lines with "perfect form" gets extremely repetative and boring. id much rather watch pep, andy and pollard jibbing around the backcountry getting super creative and saying fuck form, than watching the same old line.
apart from a few segments in certain movies, i just skip all the big mountain stuff cause it just gets old as hell. especially in the rage movies, i watched like half of one of the crist brothers segments and i just couldnt watch it. hell i havent gotten more than 2 shots into any of the big mountain segments in enjoy.

im sure big mountain lines are amazing to ski, but there is hardly any progression and its just the same old stuff over and over, its time for people to be doing different stuff and progressing backcountry in a different way.

Haha... skinning for pow in VT? This coming from the same guy who is trying to sell his Dogen's that he used for BC? Please, don't make me laugh. It's pretty rich to rip on "jibbers" who use "center mounted park skis" in the BC. Skinning 158 Dogens for BC is probably dumber than using racing skis for park so stop trying to act like you are a backcountry expert. Have you ever tried skiing no poles in the BC? Maybe next time you are skinning for epic east coast pow with your Dogens that nobody is going to buy you should keep those extendable poles in your BC pack and try it out.

in order to avoid another no poles thread i am just going to tack this onto my old thread. I have heard the argument that kids like to use poles for the swing weight and balence. But if this is the case then wouldn't it make more sense to just carry around a couple of two pound weights in each hand, I see alot kids using shorter poles so why dont they just skip the short poles entirely and go to the inevitable conclusion of just having short stubs, and also no-steeze is a retard

centered 189 hellbents ----> cliff ----> pow = amazing

i don't think its possible not to stick a pow landing on hellbents unless you land on your head.  but if you're going to half-flip cliffs then you should glue some 169 hellbents to your helmet.

frankly, i think that no poles in any kind of powder or tree skiing is just plain stupid.
pole planting puts forward pressure on the boot thus enabling you to turn without leaning back and skidding around like a little parky park park rat. no poles anywhere off piste has many drawbacks and as far as i know, has no advantages. i'm not hating on no poles in park or anything because i admit it's easier to learn grabs and stuff but kiddies if you go somewhere else for god's sake pick up some pokers.

you fucking piss me off so much, people like you who don't know shit about real skiing and who act like they are gods gift to the world because they can make some outrageous assumption about skiing which ends up being a total jong-ish comment that makes you look like a huge tool
if you know how to ski, you don't need fat skis in the powder. they are designed to make it easier, and i was short at one point, so 158 was the right length. so i guess i wasn't able to handle the whistler, tahoe, switzerland, jackson, and sun valley backcountry on the dogans, you're right, i should just go and get some hellbents and pretend i know what the fuck i'm doing

The other day, i was skiing powder trees and pillows with no poles, and it was so much fun. I got lines through the trees I never though would be possible because I had my hands free to rip branches out of my face. Oh, plus dragging your hand on a powder turn is epic.

if thats what gets you hard then go for it
the point is that freestyle skiing by definition is innovative

more surface area=better staying on top of pow

i will continue to ski however i want and not because some poser thinks that one way is the right way
