to bad its extremely awkward to manuver in powder with no poles, esspecially in tight conditions. I've been skiing no poles lately but that just because im to lazy to carry around poles. Andy Kills it, but thats why he can shoot movies like that. poles just hold everything together.

Thats just great if the lift is at the bottom and you dont need to traverse out, not everyone is so fortunate. You probably don't ski a lot of backcountry do you?

    Just because you see pro skiers doing it doesn't mean that it makes sense.

        Do you have people picking you up and dropping you off wherever the fuck you want on a sled?

            Have you ever tried to skin without poles?

               Have you ever actually done backcountry?

                    (Jerking off on the side of the road building a sick 3 foot jump doesn't count.) GTFO.

wow, you're an idiot
if you want to be able to ski, you need to pole plant. it transfers your weight and brings your turns around. you probably ski center mounted park skis in the backcountry and straightline and then fall and talk about how sick it was. stop being a douche, you're not andy mahre, and go back to the park on a powder day

id say poles are pretty nececasry for hiking backcountry. they arent so much as necesary when u have a sled to bring u out there and bring you up, still useful in truning though

haha ok. coming from who? i ski all backcountry. i haven't been in a park in 2 years. when there's no powder, i climb. i use dynafits and marker dukes as my only bindings and i ski on touring boots. i use extendable poles and breathable backcountry pants and jackets. backcountry to jibbers is hiking up 20 feet and trying to look steezy so stfu. YOU NEED POLES IN ORDER TO SKI WELL anywhere but the park
when i'm not racing for my school, i'm skinning for powder. i take it you do the same?

well because of an injury im forced to nopole, you CAN ski whatever you want without poles, if you say otherwise then you cant ski well at all.

its a training excercise to nopole, not the end all way to ski, but if you have to pole plant you need to get your shit sorted out

I wouldn't say you NEED poles to ski well, but I'd say they certainly help. As for the backcountry hiking with no poles would fucking suck though

you don't have to pole plant but you look like a dumbass otherwise. all skiers with good form use poles, and the pro skiers doing zeroes of cornices are a different story, so don't bring that up, but mcconkey, backstrom, abma, douglas, i'll keep going all use poles

for the no polers, when you are traversing pop one ski off and carry it then skateboard along, works grate, and its fun.

 i like skiing pow with no poles casue you can reach out a touch the snow real easy.

but seriously, half my pow days this year have been with no poles, and yes ive had to traverse into and out of stuff without them, and yeah its harder, but its really not that bad, we still get around much easier than snowboarders even without poles, and an extra 2 minutes getting in our out, is worth how much fun it is skiing pow with no poles.
and you really dont need to pole plant at all. all poles do is help you initiate your turns because it sorta forces you to make the correct movement. but any skilled skier can do the same movements and make just as good of turns without poles.

im not saying that its bad for people to use poles in the bc, i totally understand why they do, i just like the feeling of doing it without.
but poles in the park? i have no idea why people still carry those annoying sticks around, have you ever seen a skier doing pole plants up to a jump? no, they serve absolutely no purpose in the park other than to get in your way and piss you off.

ok other than complete gapers, i dont think ive seen any good skier do pole plants while doing setup carves into a park jump.
and yeah there are some pro's that pole plant off the lip, but that pole plant ruins any style that may happen when they are actually in the air, and im certain they could do just as well hitting jumps without that ugly pole plant.

i disagree with the manouverability part. as far as im concened, the only thing poles really do is help with balance on rails, and for hiking.

99% of skiers dont pole plant off the lip, even though i love candide, i think when he does it, it makes the whole trick look fugly. so ok, 1% of park skiers somewhat have a use for poles, for the other 99% its still useless.

The whole point from the guys at hunting yeti is to blend back country and park. But seriously 
if you want to stick to your touring bindings, extendable poles, granola bars, and same old line's have fun because there is plenty of better shit to do for people who can ski park and back country

okay, to summarize this whole thread, people look absolutely retarded skiing the backcountry without poles. the people who ski without poles are really good park skiers, and little kids who suck, ever wonder why everyone else uses them?

i would say whats the avg age of the guys in steep vs the most of the ski movies we watch. You can't say that park skiing is not going to influence back country its just the way our sport is headed. I'm not saying that what they do in steep is not legit, i am saying that there is a reason why it is not mentioned on this site when everybody talks about their favorite movies. Thats whats so great about hunting yeti is their finding a middle ground were backcountry freaks and park rats can both relate

i think we have 2 seperate issues here. hunting for yeti is a combo for jibbers to go backcountry, which is fine, i mean powder beats park any day, but good skiers ski with poles, and poles are a part of skiing. when i make a turn in the powder, i plant one of my poles, it's just how i do it and it's how 99 percent of skiers do it also, so i think the majority rules on this one, most powder skiers use poles

first i was only returning the hate directed at me. And second i am not saying everybody should drop their poles just that its worth trying out. Some people might like it some may not, but don't say its essential for everybody to ski with poles in the back country

and for you, poles may be essential for your skiing not everybody elses. And when you say "good" skiers are you implying that everybody in hunting yeti who rides without poles is not good . Your right most powder skiers do ski with poles but i am also willing to bet that most powder skiers have not being exposed to the amount of park skiing that pep or andy have. You can't say that being able to hit a cliff striaght some how takes more talent then doing a nose butter 3 of the same type of cliff

if i was to actually find out the statistic somehow im sure that it would be much much lower. think about it, ive skiied a little over 100 day's this year, probably 80-90 were in the park, and i see like 20 skiers in the park each day, and ive NEVER seen someone pole plant off the lip, and especially while carving up to the jump.
so if your that tiny percent that does pole plant off jumps, then poles have a small amount of use to you, to everyone else, they are useless.
im not hating on people who use poles, im just saying that people need to stop hating on no poles especially when it makes wayyyy more sense to drop them.

well duh doing a nose butter off a 30 foot cliff is harder than just straight airing it, but you don't really see these guys huckin 50+ footers, they just play around on the "smaller" sized cliffs. So yeah...I'd really like to see these guys try to huck a 50+ footer with no poles, rockered skis, and stick it. However, what they're doing is amazingly awesome, more my style of skiing. I'm not going to rag on them for having no poles, seeing as how I go no poles too sometimes in the backcountry, but I think it would be indefinitely harder with their gear to huck the same stuff that hugo is.
