Ya, those were the days, Simon killing rails, Tanner out on the streets, JP doing killer drops and nuts rails, Pep absolutely schooling the urban game.

seriously pop in your ski movies fomr 05 and remember the good old days!

also i need to ee a video with the perfect combo of Urban, Bc, Park like TBC again, will it ever happen?

I remember those days. For me I'm not bothered that they don't hit as mush urban anymore since I'm not at all fond of rails. Still nice to know that they can do it all and not just spinny flippy tricks.

my opinion is that they dont do it because they see the amateur movies where kids are destroying urban at the same level if not better than they would. they really cant compete with that, amateur movies have so much urban in them because the shit is free to hit and really impressive. big budget companies are all about back country and park shoots cause they know the amateurs cant fuck with that

son you must be on some of that crack cocaine if you have yourself believin tanner and pep wouldn't destroy 'amateurs' at sliding handrails if they actually would spend proper time in the city, which i take it tanner did this season. movies like pop yer bottlez, and show and prove have some of the best urban and rail sliding ever and it's mostly outta those two that you see the real hammers and bangers. there are very few other skiers that can keep up with tanner's handrail abilities especially; that's actually an aspect of his skiing that is grossly underrated.

i completely agree with you. the only way the pro's can differentiate themselves from the ams.

look at ppl like nick martini, prolly the most technical urban I have ever seen, and he is just getting on the scene.

I love seeing Pep and Tanner hit rails, in my opinion, they're still the best rail pros around. Except Frank Raymond, that is.

currently, i'd put my money on some am crews over tanner or pep when it comes to urban. i really don't think they can compete with the am kids rail transferring, pretzeling, etc, all over high-consequence urban rails. ams are mostly high school and college age kids who spend weeknights or snow days or whatever hitting mad urban.

i think tanner comes out on top overall though, because he's skiing endless pow in retallack while those kids are sliding rails.

Why bother with urban rails when you are paid to ski the best park/pow in the world? The reason ams are killing it on urbans these days is because they have to in order to get noticed.

Uh I'd say he's right there are definitely ams out there that slay rails way harder than the pros. pep and tanner could probably get sick at urban if they wanted to (I guess tanner probably is since he said he wants urban in his new movie), but the majority of the top pros would be taking notes if they hit urban with some of the ams out there. obviously there's exceptions but that's my opinion.

Yeah it seems like an ams game now. What Martini did for his superunknown is pretty hard to beat. And what I have heard about what the level 1 crew (s plural) has done is pretty ridiculous, IE spinning on, off, while on, between, pressing, tapping, and everything else on the craziest rails found.

i understand it was difficult for him to get on the rail, but then what did he do?  he slid it and came off at the end.oooOoOoOoOOoo very impressive.  MAYBE with practice tanner, pep, or some other big pro could hang with martini, LJ, ahmet, wallisch or caron, but if they all went out tonight together for a rail sesh i guarentee the ams would dominate

think of the risk factor on those rails those...those r some serious rails and could get so injured and since there at the top of the sport they dont need to get injured doin some rail when they dont have to

i'll put it this way. if someone took the time to do a 'best of' edit of tanner hall's handrail footage, there would be very very very few skiers who'd keep pace with that with their own 'best ofs'. he had handrail skiing legitimized way back in the days of wski, through pop yer bottlez, tbc, and show and prove (for a direct comparison, hitting a quad kink with way more style than tom wallisch did on the same rail years later in his superunknown edit, tiny kickers all around, no one footed hop ons, switch butters, nollies, all kinds of presses imaginable, huge 270's on, pretzel 450s off kinks...
and one thing you'll also realize while watching tanner's handrail footage. none of it is lame. he doesn't hit whack, useless handrails whereas it seems lots of amateurs with plenty of talent just don't have an understanding of what makes rails worth hitting, and worthy of watching in a movie.

no, i was saying that because of the circumstances, tanner gets a lot less practice on urbans. with practice, he can pretty much do anything, like when he decided he'd get good at half pipe and subsequently dominated the scene. i was just saying as it stands now, ams are better.

cj, to me that attitude is, well, fucked up. elite pros in the snowboard world get plenty of handrail shots on a consistent year in, year out basis and generally push the handrail scene as opposed to ams, regardless of whether it's a mack dawg or technine film.
it's sadly true though, what you say about skiing. pro skiers today seem to use jibbing as a means to ultimately shred powder with 16mm cameras focused in on their 180's and 360s into tit deep pow, assuming they had the ability to hit handrails at all in the first place. to be blunt, the ultimate for the pro skier in today's shredscape is to end up skiing powder and hitting jumps for msp; that means you're having fun while truly getting paid.
yet, all i know is that setting up a handrail downtown and making a session happen is a very fun thing to do. moving to whistler and skiing powder for a year is also loads and loads of fun. both involve learning important skills, almost necessary prerequisites if you will, to becoming an all around shredder in this day and age. don't get me wrong, i'm down for specialization, so if a certain skier, or even a certain brand chooses to focus on powder moreso than handrails it is well within their rights to do so and i will not be one to judge in the slightest. but overall there has to be at least some crossover, and i feel like skiing as a whole is slowly forgetting about its urban roots that have been established over the past half decade. it is very much a powder and aerials spectacle now at the highest levels.
what about skiing in the city? it's fun! it's edgy! there is still aaample room for progression! kids eat it up when its popular! and tanner, pep et al, back when they used to hit handrails, really were onto something! so where have all the pros gone, and who is responsible for the de-urbanization of skiing? i blame matchstick.

ps, corey vanular and frank raymond give urban skiing hope at the top end pro side of things.

I agree I wish more pros still hit urban, I'm surprised they don't the feeling after u finish a really hard rail after the setup and everything is so awsome, and it makes imo the dopest movie shots.

it is true and it is sad. it makes sense that pros might not want to hit sketchy urban set ups, and it is why the only actual professional skiers ie. making a living off of skiing, are dumont, tanner, hatveit, and MAYBE ten others.

so the rich get richer while the poor kids get poorer. simply put.

Shanghai Six has absolutely no BC. There's 2 shots of actual BC skiing in Shanghai Six (when they go heli skiing and the one dude sprays the other dude,yes, I know I've watched this movie to many times.) Everything else in that movie that you call BC are BC Booters. Although it takes place in the backcountry it's not considered BC unless there is real skiing.

wrong, you have park urban and bc, bc consist of big lines cliffs pow jumps and jibs all in the BC, so infact S6 has many BC shots, im pretty sure jumps are real skiing to, considering they take up a huge portion of newschool skiing and it takes alot of talent and practice

Although I agree with your first part where you said that pros could become a lot better than any amateurs these days if they practiced, Pop Yer Bottlez and Show and Prove definitely do not have the best urban ever. Watch Realtime and Enjoy, and then watch the previous two movies.  The urban segs are unbelievable.

the older pros slayed urban and revolutionized it in the beggining before any of these am's were doing it. the fact of the matter is that they just don't need to do it anymore or they've progressed into other stylings of skiing. dont bash them for not doing urban.
