i have an old pair of silencers, that are kinda worn out but i wanna use them on my back yard jib, and i was wondering if sanding the edges would make it easier on the rails, any suggestions?
no. do not sand them. i belived its called a gummy stone is what you need/should used to detune you edges. (i need a fellow NS to double check that its called a gummy stone) also, if you have a metal backyard jib then the edge will eventually get de-tuned, but if you are using a pvc shotgun type rail then i would suggest de-tuning it before you hit it.
Yeah, its a gummy stone. And they are nice. But sandpaper will work too. I use sandpaper in the process of tuning/detuning skis if I am doing them properly, but I have also just taken a file to them. It doesnt really matter, especially if you are using them for backyard jib action
gummy stones are more of a fine tuning and finishing tool, if you want to detune your edges from sharp to detuned you use a file, and then use a gummy stone to finish and smooth the edges.
or thats what i do, i don't know about everyone else
no, gummy stones are for deburring and detuning, ceramic and diamond stones are for polishing, but you have the right idea. to the thread creator, just use a file, or yes, sandpaper would work fine.
I was more refering to the fact that a gummy stone takes much more work to detune something than a file does, as I use mine to go over where I have filed to finish off.. unless i have some whack ass gummy stone
You can use anything to detune your edges. What you use to detune them makes no difference on the results. Gummy stones, files, and sandpaper are the three most common methods, and all of them are used in shops. They all just have a different amount of metal that they take off with each pass. Using sand paper is completely fine.
Push the file perpendicular down the length of the edge and depending on the angle you can either make it so sharp it will cut paper, or you can cut the edge right off and a 45deg angle.
