It seems as if many many people on NS are opposed to organized religion.
I don't mean for this to turn into an argument or debate, but out of curiosity how many people on here believe in God or an afterlife?

I believe in god but am jewish so there is no real focus on an afterlife in my religion
Personally, i don't think that heaven and hell are really important because if they are there thats cool if not i dont think i should have to be bribed to be a good person and if going to heaven is the reason that you act right you are placing all your chips on snake eyes

You know the coolest thing I've heard from my atheist friend was "we dont help others due to the fear of a god, we do it for the betterment of society..."

i don't think there is an afterlife.
like for example, you die, and thats it. i think it was meant more to comfort people from the fear of death or something along those lines.

I believe in most aspects of the bible, I believe in Jesus as our savior.
But with that said I also do not have a monotheistic faith. Under what I percieve as the definition of a "God" I consider myself among other things a God. Because I have a direct impact on my life, along with the sun, water, ect. They, so far in ways I can see, have affected my life more than the god. But my life is not over and I still think that God will have some other bigger affect wether seen or unseen it will be intersting to figure out for myself. WIth that explaind it sounds like im a nut and have no idea what im saying. But it realy does make sense I just dont have/ want to spend the entire reasoning and details into what I think.

i really am inbetween. it is like some days i believe in god and some days i don't, i know it's weird. either way i think god would want us to have fun and not live our lives in "fear" of going to hell. so i just stick with the i will have fun with my short time on earth.

as far as i know, we just drop cold and rot in the ground when we die. i may be wrong, but to the best of my judgement thats what i think happens. I dont believe in god but i kinda believe in karma and destiny.

i am a lutheran. a christian. and i believe in god.
it's jsut that it's sort of forced on me and makes me want to push away
my mom makes me go to church and youth group and activities all the time
it makes me never want to go in a church ever.
but i still some believe. i jsut a little confused
like how am i supposed to believe that theres something after that goes on forever
it jsut scares me.
i like to live
it scares me to die or even think about it.
i start to get scared and cry when i think about me dying. yeha i know thats retarded but still.

i'm not sure if i believe in an afterlife. i definitely don't believe that there is some place in the sky for good people, but whether there is something i'm not sure. i just don't see how you would get to that afterlife, your brain stops working, so what else is there?

Religion is the form of an answer to lifes questions. One religion cant give everybody all of the answers, and all of life's questions cannot be answered by religion.

I oppose organized religion, but I do believe in God from some of the places i've been and the things i've seen. But yah I gree with Shawn. we shouldn't live our lives being feared of God he put us her to have fun and as long as you live a reasonable good life you will be rewarded...but that's just me.

i'm a confirmed catholic. but i've been reading and talking to my sociology teacher about religion and catholicism and i've come to feel through personal choices that religion isn't necessarily correct. yes, its a great system of beliefs that keep people in line but i dont think its right. it frowns upon many beneficial advances in medicine that many people absolutely need which i completely disagree with.
if god put us on earth, why wouldnt he want us to excel and live greater, longer lives?
i dont get it.
recently pope Benedict released a statement saying that yoga, the stretching and flexibility exorcise, has been deemed a sin.
he said it was getting to know your body too well.
i dont think that's right. really.
but hey, its just my opinion

I completely agree with the beginning of your statement. I believe in God Jesus the Devil, heaven and hell. but I oppose people that force a religion on someone and bible thump or tell people that they have to worship in a specific manner. but personally, and don't want to start a battle. Look at the beauty all around, look at how perfectly our earth is set up to sustain life in comparison to other planets. I think that this alone should provide some evidence of a higher power.

And to add......Religion is the human response to being alive and having to die.....it's deep if you think about it...

Or you can look at the death, murder and chaos that much of the rest of the worlds population experiences. Or you can accept the anthropic principle and learn how to accept random chance.

I belive in a unifying force, not god in the traditional sense, not an entity but a power so to speak.
I'm not really against organized religion, just extremism.

i dont believe in god. and not to offend anyone but i think the world would be a much better place without organized religion. think of all the wars and people that have died over it. and how the church demeans gays and people that are different or of a different religion

thank you, i agree with you 100% percent, look at israel and pakistan right now, they are fighting all because of religion. there was never peace in iraq because they joined 3 different types of people and forms of the religion together. religious people hate gays and people that are different and they shouldnt, who gives a shit if you are a guy and like dick? if they dont try to get in your pants then let them be. religion is made up anyway, its just for churches to make alot of money and to control the way the world is ran.

i think you mean agnostic.
I personally don't believe in god or the afterlife. I am completely ok with religious people, and i'm sure they get something from religion that i couldn't understand, but i just can't believe that there can be any one god or gods that are concerned with our day to day lives and take our sould to live in a perfect place when we die. I think about ancient greece, rome, egypt, hindu, shinto, Judaism, christianity, and so on, and whos to say which one would be right. Maybe there is some higher power that initiated life or something, but i just think our lives boil down to the same thing as everything else. we're born, we live, we die. I think that religious people are lucky that they can always look forward to heaven, but i'm fine with just going back to the earth after a long life.

religion is the opium for the masses.
there is a "god" so that a few could control many.

There is nothing in the bible that says this. This is just the catholic leaders being corrupt. If you were to go back in history you would find that the most corrupt organization in history was the catholic church in the middle ages. I think people should look beyond "religion" and more towards faith, a belief..not a system of laws governing your beliefs

its not that they are corrupt, every single religion does that, they may not just come out and say it, but they practice that.
