just watched the '16mm' ski film GWYNE, and I have to say it's one of the best movie's I've ever seen - on par with Glitter and Black Knight. The editing was amazing, it must have been done by Lucas Arts or whoever did the Matrix, and the soundtrack rivaled Moulin Rouge.

Wait, actually, none of the skiing was cued to the music at all. At least 3 of the songs were poached from other ski movies, and the rest of the songs were just plain horrible. So many shots in the movie had multiple appearances, upwards of 3 or 4 times for a few. A few shots looked like they might have been 16mm, but the quality was definitely not up there with all dig movies like Berman's. I don't know a lot about filming, but the white balance seemed real off in most of the shots, and sometimes it was just hard to see the skiing. A better name for this movie would be 'Comp Footage from the 02-03 season: A Hi8 Ski Film'. On a positive note, there are people skiing in the movie.

Overall, save yourself 30 titless minutes and rent wild things.

oh..and anyone who has actually seen the film will pretty much agree that its definately not shot on a high 8 camera..dunno where you got that from? its about as high quality as you can get on an XL1S, but ask someone thats seen it, dunno where you ever came across the film. But the image quality is top notch

oh well, some people just dont like it, everyone else that has a copy (20 plus and growing) have loved it, haha guess i cant make everyone happy

um, they get a rather large budget for their films, so of course their going to look a little better there guy

ill tell u what, u give me the money they get, and ill make u a full on 16mm film that looks every bit as anything that comes out this season from msp/tgr/poorboyz

if you don't have the money to do it right, then why brag about it being a 16mm film? Strike Three wasn't called 'Strike Three: A Digital Ski Film'.

and the quality wouldn't matter that much, but ripping off 3 songs from ski movie 3? How about something original, or at least different. Did you really need to have like 2 minutes of footage of a kid in the hospital? you flew all the way out to colorado and instead of building a kicker or something, you filmed a bunch of rails you could easily find in parks on the east coast. and as i said before, usually the skiing is edited to the music, not just a bunch of clips thrown on a timeline. but whatever, that's just why I didn't like the movie.

why call me gay and tell me to shut up? i gave perfectly valid reasons why I didn't like the movie. how am I supposed to support 'grassroots skiing'? you're telling me that if someone doesn't grab a camera and film a bunch of comps, they won't happen? think what you want, but I'm pretty confident that me criticizing that movie isn't going to hurt the ski industry. there's a ton of movies this year and you can't buy them all, so I'm just posting my opinion so other people can choose what to buy.

Semen69, you need to pull your head out of your ass. This guy clearly has reasons why he didn't like the movie and has presented them in a concise manner, unlike most of the people that just flame shit on here. So the movie was shot on digi, why is it called a 16mm ski movie? That seems like a pretty damn valid point to me.

Ok then CKO...so poorboyz shoots 16mm. Fantastic. Do they cut and paste and use other traditional film editing techniques with their 16mm film? FUCK NO, they digitize it and probably use Final Cut Pro. They still call it a 16mm movie...should they?

As for ripping on GWYNE, that's fine. But people need to realize what happens to small companies everytime they get ripped on. It can ruin their chances of survival, and at this point, freesking can't afford to lose any decent new companies.

Hey Jib_This/semen69, that wasn't very pleasant. Were you involved in this movie in some way, because it sounds like you have nothing to defend it with so you created a new name just to rip on people.

Yeah I wasn't too impressed with gwyne. It focused too much on comps and the same shots weree repeated a few times, and there wasn't emough smooth stylie riding, too much huck

now if you knew ANYTHING about filming the difference between digi and 16mm is really not resolution anymore. most digi cams now will produce a shot with a resolution that is just as good as film because your eye can't actually see indepth enough to tell te difference. so scanning 16 mm film does not mean it downgrades the quality to digi footage. And it's not a dirty little secret, I wonder how many major motion pictures are digitally edited? (I'll let you reasearch that little tidbit)

But having a small budget isn't a great rebuttle to someone accusing you of shitty editing/music selection skills.

(I agree that ripping off songs from other ski movies, especially of past years, is pretty fuckin weak)

Sorry when I read 'dirty little pbp secret' or whatever, I had to jump in.

What's the secret? Yes it's still a 16mm film because it's filmed on 16mm. And if you think that once it's digitized, it doesn't matter, look at a 16mm shot and then look at a digi shot and tell me you can't tell the difference.

'Hollywood' movies are shot on 35mm. But then they're digitized. Does that make them digital movies? Ignoring the fact that some movies are shot digitally from the start now (yeah Lucas Arts).

That is all. It's a bummer that you got called out on your alias, but don't go ripping on the companies that founded this industry as your fall-back.

I heard that Forward is 'all 16mm' this year cause Berman took his digi and printed it to 16mm and then editied all on a steinbeck machine, cutting and pasting it all by hand. Crazy shit, eh?!?!?

I love poorboyz movies. They're the reason I ski. And I never said they sucked. Read it again if you think I did. As for supporting, believe me when I say I do. As for 16mm vs digi, it doesn't actually matter. Though I think that wasting $100 for 16 minutes of film(approx.) is stupid, and if I were a movie company I'd shoot digi or highdef digi, but that's beside the point

last thing i'll say on this one: yeah I was harsh in my review, but that's just what I thought of the movie. It's a little weird on here because the person that made the movie is on the site, but it's not personal. when hollywood makes a bad movie, shitloads of people blast it on the internet. it's not personal (however, if anyone from h3ofilms flies to my house and beats the shit out of me jay and silent bob style, props to them).

as for saying i haven't made my own movie, so i can't comment, that just doesn't make sense. While I'd argue I do know what goes into making a movie, it doesn't really matter. If that was true, every writer for rolling stone or spin would have to have produced and recorded an album before they could review one.

as far as supporting small companies, all I can say is that effort and time are good, but don't guarantee a good finished product. If h3o is going to make another movie, I'd reccommend more attention to editing and variety. If you're making a video magazine like volume, it's ok to have a whole segment about a comp. But in a movie, it gets really boring seeing the same jump from 3 different angles for 4 minutes straight. or watching a ton of people hit fred's 6 foot rail. it's gotta be broken up.

i'm definitely not trying to say the riding was bad though. the 270 onto mt snow's rainbow rail was hot, and people definitely threw down at the grail, hucker, and vt open. anyway, I'm gwyne to bed, that's it.

^okay then... By that rational the Lord of the Rings Trilogy would also not be called a 'FILM'. Fact of the matter is, 99% of all major motion pictures are digitized for editing.

U guys are fucking retarted if u think digitizing 16mm makes it a digi movie. So does this mean that its onlt a 16mm film if u watch it on 16mm film? This would mean anything you have ever watched is digital because how can a tape or dvd be 16mm. All dvd's are digital because they are in Binary.

Jib_This, I find it hard to believe that you seriously think there is no difference in quality between a 16mm shot and a digi shot. Most PBP movies have a few digi shots in them, and you can spot them very easily. However, as DV camera quality increases, the difference is becoming harder to tell. This is especially apparent with filmers who really know their digital equipment (Jeff Thomas, watch one of his flicks). It will be a while before it is nigh impossible to tell the difference between 16mm and digi.

What I guess I am trying to also get at is that the shots in Gwyne (I've only seen the trailer mind you) are most definatly NOT 16mm. I do agree that they look closer to Super8 than 16mm, but this is probably just due to the large amount of Grey sky shots and Super8's 'washed out' look after it has been processed.

in all seriousness though, hey if u dont like the film, sorry i didnt make you happy, your seriously the first person to tell me they disliked it, but your not hurting my feelings..ive heard people say every ski movie ever made has sucked

just check us out next year, were gonna be coming at you with something never before seen that will completely blow you away...and thats a promise, so check for 'Epic' around July 04' for the best east coast riders around.

Till then, if you bought Gwyne, thanks for the support, every dollar helps and im glad 99 percent of you liked it. See you all next July
