its almost like the video, just ratty, but like suit and tie ratty.   Life was straight up about being a bum...  Well sorta, they were the artists, writers, and jazz and blues musicians and fans.

I live in a somewhat rural and somewhat suburban town. If there is anybody close to a hipster at my school, I'm pretty sure I don't even know they are enrolled there. It's a stereotype, but could some one please explain to me what the fuck these kids are doing? And what the hell is a scene kid while we are at it? I am terrible at subcultures stereotypes...

i feel like i live in the hipster capital of the world now:  Austin, TX.  these dudes are at every coffee shop riding their fixed gear bikes .  SXSW was ridiculous as well...

NYC might beat it though

i don't know about those others but denver is definitely not even close to this.  i'm from colorado.  you need a bigger art/music/film scene than denver to really have hipsters.

Definitely cooler than you. Reads Black Book, Nylon, and the Styles section of the New York Times. Drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon. Often. Complains. Always denies being a hipster. Hates the word. Probably living off parents money - and spends a great deal of it to look like they don't have any. Has friends and/or self cut hair. Dyes it frequently (black, white-blonde, etc. and until scalp bleeds). Has a closet full of clothing but usually wears same three things OVER AND OVER (most likely very tight black pants, scarf, and ironic tee-shirt). Chips off nail polish artfully after $50 manicure. Sleeps with everyone and talks about it at great volume in crowded coffee shops. Addicted to coffee, cigarettes (Parliaments, Kamel Reds, Lucky Strikes, etc.), and possibly cocaine. Claims to be in a band. Rehearsals consist of choosing outfits for next show and drinking PBR. Always on the list. Majors or majored in art, writing, or queer studies. Name-drops. May go by "Penny Lane," "Eleanor Rigby," etc. when drunk. On PBR. Which is usually.

naahhh dude. you're thinking of "beat culture". Poets like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg who wrote the poem "howl", Lawrence Ferlenghetti etc etc began the beat culture and beat poetry in san fransisco in the 50s and early 60s. They eventually got eaten up by hippies and their ideals and poetry where mangled and turned into everything it was standing against. sorry, im a poetry nerd and had to correct to you...

sounds like a pretty sweet lifestyle to me. Better than a bunch of the previous shit we have encountered; grunge, gangster, and emos.

The only thing i don't like is all the people that try to do it,but you get that in any sub-culture. So stop all the hating and just do what ever it is you do. If people didn't have to get into fads and trends then everyone could just be their lame self with their own values. It would be sweet.....but i guess a lot of people just don't have their own values so they try to pick them up from popular culture of the era.

Those fuckers ruined fixed gears. But then again people usually understand that I mustn't be a hipster, because I actualy put a good deal of work into my bike, and didn't PAY to make it look like a 70's road bike. Because it actually is a 70's road bike I got from a pawn shop.

the only thing that doesnt make me a hipster is my hair style... but it dpeends what you consider hip. i listen to music most of you have never heard of, i wear v necks and neon coloured clothing, and i own a pair of glasses with no lenses.. but i dont consider myself a hipster.
