my 2 cents is i say we have gun laws but in the end of the day i believe good law abiding people should be able to have and carry a gun.

i live in canada and not alot of people here own guns my family doesnt own one and im perfectly content with that

i find this hard to believe actually. 

he broke the first three rules of firearms safety all at once;
- always treat a firearm as if it were loaded
- always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction
- always keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot

especially when cleaning your firearm.  literally the first two steps are to pop the magazine and work the action to eject the round in the chamber.  if your story is true, he failed at the first two steps.  and thus had no business with a firearm.

yeah but that was in the context of the 1700's when America was being occupied by England.

Now Im not saying people who have guns are all bad. Heck Ive been hunting with my grandfather before, and I do believe he has a right to own his hunting rifle but when it comes to hand guns there really isnt a reason for them except to kill another human being.

It's funny to see all the hippy pot head kids try to argue against the case they are using to say they want legal weed. 


Also, anyone who says ban all guns alltogether and that is the easy solution is ignorant.

And my final point is guns are fun to shoot, if you haven't tried, find someone to take you target shooting for a day.

When's the last time you came to the mid west?

Since the time I was able to walk I've been around guns. Partly because my father was an agent for Immigration and always had his Glock on him, but also because they are fun to shoot. Some of my best memories from childhood are my dad and I at the range. Him teaching me range safety. Always point the gun down-range, always assume its loaded. Common sense IMO. We would go out to the local FOP lodge and shoot for hours.

Gun handling not only teaches a person discipline, it also gives them confidence knowing they can protect a loved one properly. I might be saying all of this because I come from a white conservative famliy, but if you teach someone that a gun is used for protection only, then there wouldn't be so many accidents.

Anyway to get back to gun laws, I completly for them. I think you must have background checks, training, the works to be able to own and handle a gun. Firearms are too easily accessible these days and it's the government's fault for it. They will send your ass to jail for a few ounces of a plant, but will  only give a slap on the wrist to someone with an unlicensed firearm.

Don't patronize me. You have this holier than thou attitude, and it's really starting to piss me off.

Saying a prayer does not give the animal a pulse again. It's a sign of respect for the animal... a sending off if you will. That is something you will never understand because you are close minded and headstrong... atleast that's how you make yourself out to be in these forums.

Animals and people die every single day. We are a type of animal. We are a type of predator. Think of a gun as my fangs. It's my tool to acquiring food. Do you call anteaters heartless for using a stick to get ants out of a hole and then eat them? Do you think lions are heartless and sadistic for killing and eating antelope? This is the cycle of life, and no matter how hard you try to stop it or no matter how strongly you feel against it, it will never stop.

Stop dwelling on little details. A "sending off" is a general term. I meant it in the way that means showing respect for the dead, and where they are going, if anywhere, I have no clue. No one does, and I'm okay with that. I guess I'll find out when I die, but right now I'm not stressin' about it. I am a Catholic and I am fairly religious. You are and Atheist, something that I do not agree with, but I still respect your beliefs. You have your beliefs and I mine. Now you need to come to grips with reality. Not everyone believes what you do. They only way you're going to go anywhere in life is if you learn to respect those that don't believe the same as you. Calling someones religion a "mass brainwashing" will get you nowhere.

I don't personally know you, but from what I can tell, you have a lot of growing up to do. The world isn't always what you want it to be. There will always be people who disagree with you, and you need to learn to respect that.

I wonder how much violence is associated with Marijuanna manafacturing/distrubition/sales. I've heard it's non-existent, but then again I've also seen huge drug houses on the news with tons of automatic weapons in them. I bet if you can co-relate a large portion of gun violence with the illegal manafacturing/sale/distrubution of Marijuanna you could have a solid proving point of legalization. Jose the drug lord wont need to shoot up his enemies on the block, because Steve the Greatful Dead fan can buy his shit down at the local Citgo. Also co-related, I bet a large majority of the deaths due to guns come from illegal ownership of them, not the responsible ownership associated with the NRA morals.


God I hope some one reads this, it's on the third page and no body ever looks on the third page...

I've been agreeing with a lot of your posts up until the whole "religion isn't brainwashing" I just can't agree with a group of people that force their beliefs on to unsuspecting children.

Anywho. You are completely right about hunting and using guns to hunt. We as humans have always been hunters, we've been killing since the stone age and will continue to do so to eat. It's just unfortunate that those damn deer and bear haven't evolved fast enough to manufacture their own weapons.

I think we've strayed off the subject of gun control though. It's not the hunters we need to worry about. Its the (oh no I didnt') gangsters, thugs, and criminals that need the gun control laws. And I think that the NRA people need to lay off and let them control guns a little more to make this world a little safer.

Interesting... ya know I've never really looked at it that way before. I guess you are right in a way. I honestly think it depends on the family and the environment the child grows up in though. My family didn't force anything on me, I just chose it because it's my true belief.

This is such an asinine argument I keep hearing. Handguns are used for sport as much as a rifle or a shotgun. It's not like a longer barrel is going to kill you any less. In fact, larger guns are generally more accurate and use bigger rounds so your much more likely to fuck someone up. Again, banning handguns isn't going to prevent criminals from obtaining them, and the odd whack-jobs that go on shooting sprees will just use a 12 gage instead of a Glock. Banning handguns wouldn't make any difference. And comparing the US to Canada is simply idiotic because the demographics are so wildly different between the two countries its not even funny. Even with that, the rate of gun related violence in Canada compared to the US is not that different from the overall rate of violent crime respectively.

I don't know if you'll read this but thank you for your respect. It's really hard these days for atheists and "believers" to even be civil to each other. I admire someone who took years of their lives to explore all possibilities of how man was put upon the earth. And if they come to the conclusion that their is a higher power and he watches over us then that is a beautiful thing. I wish sometimes I had faith in times where I feel alone.

I have a very moderate standpoint on the topic of gun control.  I'm not saying that guns are a terrible thing.  What I am saying is that there is a common denominator that we all can live by.  And right now handguns are stepping across the line.  You want weapons?  Fine keep a shot gun right by your bed.  Someone comes into your house, blow his head off.  I can assure you, you wont miss him at a range of 5 yards with a 3 1/2 in. mag firing buckshot. 

People want hand guns to protect them from something that will rarely happen to them.  Wild animals now?  C'mon buddy.  I've hunted my entire life.  I've come face to face with Black bears, Brown bears, mountain lions, and venomous snakes.  99/100 then turn the other way and run.  I mean yeah, in areas of the country with Kodiaks and Grizzlies you might be in a little more danger... but if you're that worried about it, I'd much rather be packing my slug gun.  And really what percentage of the population hunts in Griz territory...    .0000001%

But let's not beat around the bush here.  As a matter of fact, how about a little statistical data?  Here are some of my favorites:

About 10 percent of the adult population owns 77 percent of the total stock of firearms.

There are about 65 million handguns in the United States. Handguns make up 34 percent of all types of firearms.

Of all firearm-related crime, 86 percent involved handguns.

For every time a gun in the home is used in a self-defense homicide, a gun will be used in—

  • 1.3 unintentional deaths

  • 4.6 criminal homicides

  • 37 suicides

    • For every time in 1997 that a civilian used a handgun to kill in self-defense, 43 people lost their lives in handgun homicides alone.


    Handguns are a huge issue in my opinion.  Like I said before, they are compact, easily concealable, have a relatively high rate of fire, and have a large magazine capacity.  When a certain weapon is involved in 86% of all firearm related crimes I think theres a problem.  And just because one person is responsible with a weapon doesn't mean other people are.

    The 2nd amendment is out dated.  When it was written, people were simply shooting muzzeloaders...  as in one shot, then a 30 second reload time.  Today I can fire 15 rounds in 5 seconds and reload in 5 more.  So if "the right to bear arms" is all encompassing... then why restrict fully-automatic weapons.  Why can't private citizens own RPGs, or mortar launchers?  Why can't a 50 Cal turret be an option on my H3?  These are arms and I wish to bear them.

    And another thing I think is so funny, is that the people that wish to have extremely loose or no gun control at all, are the same people that don't mind limiting Americans lives with the patriot act.  The patriot act was designed to put all kinds of restrictive security measures on the entire US population in order to prevent terrorism.  But they don't want security measures with weapons.

    I'll take this stat, which is a big one against gun crimes and give you this one:

    "According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from -

    * a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
    * a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
    * family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%"

    People are going to get handguns no matter what. 14% of guns were obtained in a legitimate fashion. That means that the other 80+% weren't. If people really want guns for crimes, they will get them one way or another. Keeping handguns away from law abiding citizens won't change that.
