You'd think with all the little mom and pop production studios or companies here on NS, you'd think at least some of them would be more powder oriented... But their all about park instead, whats up with this?

makes sense that theres more park in the smaller production groups on here. at least half this site (prolly more) is east coast or midwest where powder isnt abundant

Idea inspired me for sure - me and a bunch of kids are moving out to Alta next winter, and we're gonna introduce that old man's mountain to some jibbing.

So yeah Subtle Science Productions and Janky Films (small ass editing crew) are headed west to make a pow/jib movie, I think that's where the sport's headed. can't wait to buy some serious fattie skis! Lotsa switch in pow...

i believe it was a rhetorical question that he immediately answered with a very valid point so please dont go TGR on us by dismissing either park skiing or the desire to get sponsored

im not saying that getting sponsered is the reason to ski
the main reason kids start making videos: to get their talents noticed and perhaps get some industry interest behind them.  most of the activity on this site is done by skiers on the east coast (if you dont believe me check out the post counts on the regional forums)  we dont have a ton of pow to ski.  we have racing and jibbing.  how many east coasters really get hyped because of their backcountry abilities?  prolly none.

yeah i guess youre right about documenting the season, good call.  theres deff some fun BC in the east...ive done Algonquin & marcy, mansfield, dodges, big j...most kids just dont realize it though and cant shell out 600$ for equipment to ride that stuff

I actually do not really like filming park. The only park we are filming is private sessions (plus a couple of other park shots). Im not into it, i like pow, backcountry, cliffs, and jumps.

We have had a lot of bad luck with sleds this year so have not gotten the pow shots i have been wishing for, but still have a decent amount and tons of pow to come.

wait for our first movie we're puting out this year, sure it has a decent ammount of park in it but some of our riders absoloutly slay big mountain/powder types of things.

Actually you are wrong about how your East Coast Regionals is bumpin because what I'm seeing is that the Washington State(which is where i live and ski) regionals forum is holdin it down. But the East Coast does dominate this site...

My bet is just that the kids who ride park almost all the time have time to film it, those who ride a lot of big mountain are busy out skiing that and park and not having time to film... and besides who wants to be the camera guy on a day with a couple feet of fresh?!

newschoolers seems to be oriented to the younger crowd, who as it just so happens, doesnt have the money to afford to ski pow and gear, let alone pay for pow and pay for film gear

I do it all the time. I have ridden one pow day the hole year. And it snowed for pretty much a month straight.
Trust me, we love getting sick shots in the pow just as much. And ripping the sled around in the pow is fun enough :).

Because who wants to film on a pow day? No one, people want to ski it. Plus a good amount of the am filmers on this site are east coast...

We have started filming quite a bit this year.  We ski about 75% pow and 25% park however, 90% of our footage is in the park, why?

1.  Nobody wants to stop and film when it is 3 feet deep.
2. It is scary to hold a camera when it is dumping because it gets wet.
3. By the time you set up a sick shot in the Wasatch it is so crowded somebody poaches it.
4. Lighting is usually bad on a powder day without the use of a helicopter, snowmobiles, or a cat.

and there are 4 reasons why only 25% of our ski days are documented on film.

Pow and the BC are not nearly as accessable to the majority of people on this site where as park is readily available any given day

its pretty simple in my mind

skiing park with your crew, you either have someone thats always filming or you take turns filming eachother, it's super easy to film in the park and you can run laps through it very quickly.

with BC, who wants to do all that work to hike out there to stop half way down your line and set up equipment to film people, unless your getting paid for it or just love filming then no one really does.

its just so much easier to film park, and the fact that the entire midwest/eastcoast doesn't have much of a BC (if any at all) so yeah theres gonna be tons more park edits/films than pow.

its not that difficult, i say this because ive done it...

P.s. in all honesty alot of the edits i see on here involved alot of very very bad filming in the park because people just dont know the basics of composition...even in follow cams!

Jea, we film cause its fun to watch when we can't go skiing, and its something to do.  I put it online and it gets flamed like mad, casue the filming is shitty and whatnot, but I enjoy watching shitty ass videos my friends and I made more than watching some pro production or whatever, its more real to me, and I remember all the stuff that was going on that day and how fun it was.  It's also neat to see what it looks like when you do super sweet tricks.

You just have to be a dedicated filmer. If your wanting to make a sweet video then you have to be dedicated.
Ive sacraficed a shitload this year. Last time i rode park was mid december. Rode one pow day this year (im from tahoe, there is a lot), and the only other day i just rode i was helping my girlfriend get better.
Have not complained about it one bit. I could of had probably 20 pow days in by now. Its just a sacrafice you have to be willing to make. Most amature filmers dont make it. Why might you ask?
Cuz they are doing it more for fun then to get big. Which is fine and cool.
But if you want to take it further than just a fun video of some friends then you have to be willing to give up a lot.

And a tip that might help you, if you cant afford a rain cover for your camera... wrap it in suran wrap. It works like a charm and will get soaking wet but ur camera will be dry :).

And yes the midwest/east doesnt have the backcountry like the Sierras, PNW, Utah, or CO.

ok first of all like most said, alot of people on this site are from the east. Im from quebec and i love to ski powder. Its probably the best thing ive ever done. But the thing is why waste your time filming that shit when you get 2-3 days of powder a year (although this year has been different)and you want to enjoy it as much as possible which involves not waiting for the dude to film. And when you know that with the mountains we have, it wont look amazing, why do it? So people on the internet can tell you how much of a good all around skier you are?

Uh I take videos not to necessarly get sponsered but to check out my progression and to see what i can do better. Because I realize that most kids who ski park will not get sponsered what so ever, so i chose to better myself in anyway for my own reason and just because I love progression.

If you don't have a sled backcountry isn't very much fun at all. Most powder at ski areas get's tracked up and crappy looking pretty fast.

The park doesn't get untracked when the kids are at school, however the pow does. It's much easier to get an untracked line when nobody has skied it yet, and people not in school get to ski it all day and can get some filming in with it. kids come after school and on weekends when all the pow has been slayed, but the park is still skiable.


Basically people who have the choice of not going to school during the day get to ski more pow--more chance for filming.

Pow is sick and no one on NS can deny that if they got the chance to ski a couple feet of fresh pow then they would take a day off from the park. That doesn't happen much. The Park is just as cool tho.

Well....that is a bit up in the air at the moment.  Graduating this year and either going to end up in Portland or Seattle it is looking like.  So it is staying at least in the PNW.
