this is my 5000th post on newschoolers. i started here in 2001 when the website was little more than harvey's buddies and a lame blue tailgrab silhouette logo. since then ive seen a lot of skiing and ive done a lot of skiing. I'm gonna be 24 on saturday which means when i started skiing a lot of you were still in preschool or diapers. even though im still relatively young, im kind of a vet for freeskiing and park skiing and heres what i have learned in case you care. ski for yourself, not for sponsors, not for that 900 youve been trying forever not to impress your friends or some girl, ski for you. its the only thing ive ever done that can be 100% for me and yet somehow not selfish. if you arent the best dont sweat it as long as you are having fun. my best trick is a touch grab 5 or a 270 onto a box and ive been practicing since the ski patrol made me wreck little kickers i would build. it doesnt matter. you gotta realize that a 360 isfucking impressive even if a kangaroo flip is more impressive. Make friends skiing and keep them, they are the best friends ive ever had and they always hook it up when you need it. I've been injured a lot...14 broken bones and 4 surgeries (the most recent being acl reconstruction on friday) but i never let it scare me or get me down because if you let skiing get away then its your loss, ive seen it happen a couple times to good people (Hunter Biles for those who know him). Oh and for those of you who do, stop whining, talking shit or otherwise being a little bitch because outside of the park no one cares if you have this years lines and some other kid is still rocking concepts. for that matter outside of the park no one cares if you can throw a sick ass switch 7 double grab. finally, practice and ski as much as you can and if your lucky and your parents help you do that, then thank them a lot. that is all, have fun.
my name is ralph mustachio, and i support this message. right on dude, i'm 22 and 3/4 this site is better at park than me. but whatever, skiing is fun, it's the bigger part of my identity/who i am, and i can't wait to go ski some effing pow....
thanks for making my point for me man. if you read it and didnt just skim it you'd see that i just got surgery on friday so i dont have much more to do then sit here with my leg up and post on ns. i would say that at least 3500 of those posts came when i was a little hater too but now i only post every once in a while. oh and i wonder what your parents would think of you calling my suggestion to thank them "bullshit"?
great post, this really should be stickied because every once in a while i forget that i just ski for fun and not to show off to some girl or friends even though i think thats fun but it shouldnt just be about having fun. great post.
thanks Krongos, awesome fucking post. shit like this is what this website is about, but it's never apparent with how much bullshit there is on this site. thanks for putting it so well, I know that I couldn't have. the friends I've made at college have been 80% skiing friends, and they're really the only ones that I really care about. skiing to me is both pushing myself athletically, and being with friends, it's given me an outlet for creativity, an identity, most of my best friends who i'll know and keep up with for the rest of my life. and yeah, i'm in the same boat skills-wise, but I don't really give a shit and love a good three any day.
good luck with the knee, rehab like crazy and get back on the slopes where you belong
wow epic post. There was a dan maguire in my ENGS 50 class last semester, and i am almost positive this is the same kid. This is a little reminiscent of the ski story he wrote.
good post. I feel the same way. I have been skiing for 20 years now and it just get better ever year. I may not be the best at my mountain but i think i have the most fun. I get pumped when somebody tries a 180 for the first time and lands it about as much as somebody lands a 12 for the first time. I just like to see people trying new stuff and having fun.
i have so much respect for people like you who relise that skiing isnt about what you can do, its about fun. Great post man, and happy birthday for the weekend
