Freedom Tower, New York, US Rising from the wreckage of the World Trade Centre, the Freedom Tower will return New York to the forefront of skyscraper design. After a long time in getting the project started the single tower will be finished in 2011 and will reach 1,776 feet high.

Burj, Dubai Dubai is where is at architecturally these days. The crown will be the Burj. When completed it will the tallest building in the world by a long shot. The lead architect is Adrian Smith of the Chicago’s Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Its final height is a secret but it is believed will be 808 metres (2651 feet) high.

20 Fenchurch Street, London, UK This interesting building project planned for the City of London has been dubbed the ‘Walkie Talkie Building.’ The curvy project is designed to make use of solar power and be remarkably study.

Shard London Bridge, London, UK When completed in 2009 it will be the tallest building on the London Skyline, dwarfing all other projects for the foreseeable future. Designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano, the glass pyramid will rise 1016 feet into the London clouds.

You are correct in your guess that foreign laborers working on the towers arent living a real comfortable life. That being said, they are doing better than a great deal of their asian counterparts. It wouldn't necessarily be correct to say that these projects are funded by big oil. The leaders of Dubai took their oil revenues and re-invested it in real estate, tourism etc, and well, you can see the result. I couldnt give you a number but I know that not much of the UAE's GDP comes from oil. Finally you should consider the vast opportunity Dubai provides for foreign architects, construction managers, and engineers. Anyways props to Dubai for not being fucking retarded with their oil money~

But are these hotels that expensive? I mean you make a giant hotel with thousands of rooms, but who's going to fill them?

in my humble mind it seems like you contradicted yourself big time.

the second thing, dont go spouting numbers if you dont have the sources to back them up...  i honestly have no idea how much the UAE makes in oil revenues, and neither do you(unless you show me a creditable source)

The oil money was re-invested into real-estate and tourism, so at this point the buildings are being funded by their own industries, not oil. I also didnt state any numbers, even saying I was unable to tell you exactly, but since you asked

That should answer most of your questions. When I made that statement I was drawing from my memory on what I had learned on Dubai, not assumptions, and as you can see the sources will back me up. Dubai itself has an even lower oil revenue at 6% of total gdp. You say that the oil could be put to better use, but I fail to see how. They have created a vastly successful economy that pulls in billions upon billions of foreign dollars. This economy has provided a huge number of jobs for their native citizens. Sure, at this point many of them will be unable to participate in the more high-end engineering jobs, but this economy brings in huge amounts of money to be spent on schools and such. I fail to see how you could not consider Dubai a huge success. Their government took a limited resource and turned it into a prosperous self-sustaining economy. So many other countries have failed (or fallen far short) at such with far more natural resources.

hehehehe   i have a little explaining to do,   in my posts(i dont know if you read them all?)  i was speaking with a heavy dose of E sarcasm......

i think its pretty safe to say i am one of the most conservative members of NS and i was merely  pointing out (through sarcasm)  how, many of the people i see posting in this thread saying "wow these are so great" type remarks, are some of the same people who i see posting in other forums in some of the most hate filled ways against America and capitalism...


and i can honestly say, i applaud the people of Dubai very much for what they have accomplished...   
get where i  am going with this?

Well, firstly this should probably be in Media and Arts, since it's architecture, but who cares.
In art history our prof showed us a picture of Dubai 15 years ago. It was just a patch of desert with a dirt road running through it and a few shabby buildings. It's incredible how much has been developed there in such a short period of time. I think Dubai has more than half of the world's sky cranes right now, or something like that. whenever one area has a ton of wealth they try to build the most impressive buildings to show it. In ancient Rome the had the Colosseum and the Pantheon, which would have been the Al Burj or whatever of their day.

so i just want to clarify, if  its horrible how walmart treats their employees, why isnt it as bad how people are being treated elsewhere?

or is the difference that the Arabs are putting up big shiny buildings and walmart only puts up big ugly warehouses.

Workers in the UAE have been treated like shit, no question. The difference though is that in the UAE, when they strike, they actually get what they want from the management in a matter of days. If something sucks, they listen and change it.

would you not agree that these buildings are a symbol of big business?   cause all i ever see on NS is something like this "big business can suck a fat one"  and now people are praising these "things"  as great and beautiful.     but  at the same time  everyone hates on big business. 

again no "hate"  from me, i just think some of the people on here need to take a good hard long look at what they believe in.

Look. I'm not against big business. What I'm against is government giving excessive breaks to big business, and big business having its interests exclusively considered by the government. And I think that is what most people are against too. Not big business itself, but government working with it.
These buildings are definately a symbol of big business, which is fine. Let them build what they want, it's a free country, but we're praising them for making what they spend their money on look cool.

Its gone on for six days. How long did the writers strike here in the US last again? Conditions for workers there suck, for sure, but it seems like steps are being taken, quickly at that, to improve them.

As for big business, I'm not going to help or deny your point. I just think these buildings look cool.

also i will play devils advocate here,       these buildings will be used by such a small portion of society so why make them so fancy? why not put up a little sloppy warehouse and donate the the excess to the starving children in africa

ok first off, i could give a rats ass about the writers strike.

second, from what i gathered from the article these strikes were only for the big construction projects right?     i would imagin they would be a pretty high priority on the governments list, what about the people on the lower end of the national economic ladder(walmart type employees)

No, the article went on about how the government is going to set a national minimum wage. They do care, they're at least learning from their mistakes and quickly moving to resolve issues.

You are right that there are more helpful things they could do with the money, but they aren't doing that with them. Big deal, it's their money. That's not the argument. Are you arguing just for the sake of argument?
Regardless, Walmart does have the right to put the supercenter there, but the town can fight it, or the people could not use it. It's all part of their freedom, on both sides.

Essentially, you're the hypocrite.

The working conditions may suck, but the strikes are making it so that there will be a minimum of pay and conditions in all of the UAE. Your implicit argument that they are somehow not as modern as us is extremely insulting, given that your arch nemesis, Wal-Mart, is an American product, yet would not give striking workers the light of day like the UAE just has.

Also, like Drew said, the beauty of something is separated from the morality of it. Big Business schmisiness, those towers are cool looking. That's a qualitative assessment i can make regardless of why they are built or at the expense of whom.

A better example would be medieval city states of Italy. The wealthy there were always trying to one up each other and show their wealth by constructing towers (for simplicity's sake). Siena, Florence, Gimignano, etc,  all those places had like over 100 towers each. Imagine that shit.
