Capturing in Premiere CS3

I just got Premiere onto my computer, and when I try to capture, I can't use any tape controls on the computer, and when I try to capture in/out, it tells me "Switch Camera to VTR mode."  Can someone tell me what this means?  I'm capturing through USB till I can get my hands on a firewire.

no im pretty sure it has to be firewire
