Sidewalls

What is the good thing about them? I mean what do they improve in skis? 'cause my walls kinda chip from the topsheet and I think it's because the sidewalls. My old skis without sidewalls didn't chip. So I'd like to know what do they give to a ski.

yeah every one says that cap sucks but i find that cap skis dont really chip or any thing and side wall skis chip away.

some people say theyre more duarable than cap construction cuz cap can delam, personally i live by cap, but i think its sort of personal preference...

my invaders are capped and they chip, but not like my public enemys did. they would get one nick in them and just peel all the way down the ski. big chunks would come off. some sidewall skis stay good, like rossis

^ yeah i found that PEs would get big hunks peelin off, but my foils just get little cut things and are fine.

Sidewalls improve edge hold.  I prefer the way sidewall skis ride, but I spend all my time cruising around the mountain and the backcountry.  For park you're probably better off with cap, although it really doesn't make much of a difference there (if any at all).  To prevent topsheet chipping you can take a file to the edge of the sidewall and topsheet and round it off a bit.  It won't stop it altogether, but your skis will chip less.

cap is cheaper to make, and most of the time comes out lighter. sidewall is more durable and generally skis better all mountain
