Sig Ep is currently the largest social fraternity in the country, mostly in part to them getting rid of the traditional pledging process. So yes they are different.

It's quite attractive to students who don't really want put a lot of time into joining a fraternity. And on campuses I've been to Sig Ep doesn't get a lot of respect from a lot of other houses. You're going to see a lot of fraternities move towards this in the next 20 years or so. It eliminates hazing and what not. Large fraternities have 2 primary goals:

#1 Keep membership numbers up.

#2 Avoid lawsuits and negative publicity.

There was actually an article in the NY Times, Time Magazine, or the Wall Street Journal (I can't remember) about Sig Eps new Balanced Man program. Their numbers have skyrocketed since it was started.
