simple is better. I really like solid colors or simple tiled backgrounds with just a letter or word like how NS' background used to be and kind of how it is now.

you know it helps when you tell people like a theme, or a color combo, or any general ideas you want on the look of the site.

make a pattern, set it to a low opacity with a relatively neutral color behind it and tile that.

my advice to you is to keep the background consistent throughout the whole site. don't chop and change things.
