Short skis

ive got a buddy who is about 6" and rides 159 skis like hes proud of it. he wants to get 169 hellbents for park. whack. skiing with short skiis isnt skiing, is snowblading. and its gay. thats why people ski, not snowblade

159s are tiny for him but i mean 169s arent that bad. they are still small for him but maybe he likes smaller skis since he is more comfortable with it. 159s really are snowblades though

height doesn't really matter, its what you're comfortable with. but 159 is what i ski on...and i think its a little on the shorter side for me, but 6'1"? he should definitely step it up to AT LEAST 169 for park, but not on hellbents...why would you get a short powder ski for park?

you'd think his weight would affect the performance of a shorter ski. i felt a little scared skiing on 151s for slalom in high school

you can't turn properly with skis like that, they just wash out especially if you 6'1" riding 159s. Anyone remeber how to turn on groomers- turn with the front of the skis, weight forward. when i ride small twintips that flex up i don't have enough in the front and i feel too off balance

im 6'3" and i have 170's for park and 181's for all mtn/ pow but its not that i choose to have short skis for park its that i just cant afford new ones haha

To be totally honest the size of ski that you ride has almost nothing to do with your height.  Skis know three things about you when you ski on them 1. your weight 2. how agressive of a skier you are and  3. what type of skiing you are doing.  So if the person is 6 foot and all of 120 pounds and likes park then a 159 might not be too bad for them on the other hand i know guys who are 5'6" 200 pounds and ski fucking hard who ride 184s.  So please dont just base your ski size on your height thats how you did it with skis from the 80s not a modern ski.

there you go you are an agressive skier so a longer ski works for you  Me i have very little choice in what i ride Im 210+ pounds 6'8"  and an agressive skier so i will ride really the biggest thing i can get my park skis are 185s and they look tiny next to me lol

ever hear of leverage?? saying that height has little to do with ski size is retarded.  a kid that's 6 feet on 159's...regardless of weight is going to tip over on those things, not to mention be able to flex the shit out of them.  there's no way, if he's any kind of decent skier/jumper, would those things be stable on a moderately sized jump.  kid straight up needs at least in the mid 70's. tell him to grow a pair.

I'd say it's more of a stability issue at his height than 'looking cool' - should definitely be on something longer than 169, PARTICULARLY if they are rockered.

i didnt say that height has nothing to do with ski size and i completly agree with you on the fact that he would just tip over (like he was on snowblades)  I was trying to make the point that basing a ski size soley on your height is also a pretty stupid thing to do.  Sizing a ski right takes more knowlage then just someones height or weight or anything else you need all of that info to get it right.

im 6'5 and 190, and im got 178. they work but i still feel they are to short. your friend really should be riding on at least 174 to 180.

I cant ski a short ski , I'm 5'10 and i need at least a 180 for park , my powder ski is a 186 and my big mountain ski will be close to that or over 190.  i guess to each his own

word! hes really less of a buddy and more of a D bag, but thats besides the point..

I don't understand the hype behind short skis. i mean, sure you can spin faster but isn't that sort of 'cheating'? it really is closing the gap between skiiers and snowbladers, and i don't like it. Tanners the best skier in the world (opinion) and he still rides at least a 180. it seems like even a bunch of pros today are using skis that are way to short for them traditionally just so they can spin like madmen in pipe/slopestyle comps. i say learn how to ski on real skis, even in the park, and leave the short skis to the short 12 year old mini-shredders and girls.

and i realize that my signature makes me seem really biased, but so what. i am. especially snowbladers with poles...OOO that makes me mad

I'm 5'11" and I still use my 149 k2 juvies.  But only as rock skis for our extremely tight trees.  Normally I ride 174s.

short skis aren't "cheating"... first of all snowblades are around 100cm so thats a pretty big gap if you ask me. don't feel threatened by snowblades man, that sport is a gimmick and anyone who knows what they are doing is riding real skis. as for pros that rock shorter skis to spin to win, who cares, if thats what they want to do and they can stomp tricks with them let it be. but in the end it all comes down to what you want out of your ski. personally, i'm 5'8" 140 lbs and i ride fairly stiff 179s for park skis because i like a ski thats going to give me more support on larger jumps and halfpipe. but someone who is more into rails might prefer a shorter ski with more flex for jibbing. your buddy does seem to have an unusually small preference in his skis, actually i would probably laugh at him if i saw someone that big on skis that small, unless he absolutely kills it... otherwise, he probably just doesn't have enough experience on different size skis to make a good decision on his ski size. and that idea of riding 169 rockers in the park is one of the dumbest ideas i've ever heard. if he wants a wide short ski for park, he should get the line elizabeth, thats a ski thats actually designed to be a wide park ski and i'm sure it will be much better than the rocker in the park. i mean come on, a rockered ski in the park? give me a break.

I don't really like short skis either. I'm 5'4" and I have PE 159s set back a bit and they feel a little short sometimes.

im 5'7 and i ski 175's. i don't think anything smaller would quite work for anything.  how can landing be at all stable on something that small?  Wouldnt he just flex the shit out the tails if he landed back seat?

for park do you prefer your skis to be on the longer or short side.

im pretty sure that that size makes sense for you. pretty median.  I'd say for park skis get em right around your height if you are of average build, for big mountain bombing applications go a bit bigger.

I am 5'8 and around 170 and i have tiny ass 151s that are WAY to short for me. the only reason i got them was be cause at the time i was switching from snowblading back to skiing and had no clue how big skis were actually soposed to be.

Jesus dude, are you serious? His buddy is a d-bag because he rides short skis. I ride 161's and Im probally 6 foot. Do I like riding them? No. But Im still pretty comfertable on them, and yeah 159 is a short ski, but not even close to a snowblade. And how is riding a short ski "cheating"? There are just as many disadvantages as there are advantages of riding a short ski. Your skis are way less stable going fast and you have way less balance in the air with short skis. So just because you dont like someones short skis doesnt mean you go around calling someone a d-bag, saying they need to learn how to really ski and they need to stop cheating. Just because Tanner is skiing atleast 180's doesnt mean that everyone needs to. So cmon dude hate on me for riding short skis because Im such a fucking d-bag.

Yeah^ you need short skis so you can do ballerina tricks on rails. thats the ONLY upside, if thats even an upside, Rails look gay now by the way. Other than that a short ski is limiting you in what you can do . Your back seat on your landing you have nothing there, I cant stand small skis, i hit real features ,not the baby park so i need something bigger.  D Bag.
