Looking for something to do over the summer. One of my friends thought of the idea of working on a cruise over the summer. like a bust boy or something on the lines of that. yea the actual work might suck but the idea of being on a cruise for the off hours would be sick. anyone have any experience? like if you aren't working, can you just chill on the boat as if you were a guest?

yea i have worked on two one for 18mths one for only 9, one for P&O and one for cunnard.
these were 5 star boats, the best of the best so you saw a shit load of money.
you can save money easily as rent and food is provided so you dont spend anything until you are ion port. (these ships were round the world cruises so you are on the ship for 9mths.
port can be fun but you are only aloud to head out at every second port as its half the staff on half the staff off as the ship was still running (restraunts, concierge, cinema etc.) i was a concierge so most of the time spent was ringing the next port to organise trips for guests, reading up on the cities im going to things like that so really 9 hr shift after that study you look at 14 hr days.
waiters and bus boys are easy 10 hr shifts roatating.
pay was good i was on 40 000 euros a year with rent and food as middle managment after i got back to sydney i could get a job anywhere i wanted and had enough cash to put a deposit down on a two bedroom apartment in the middle of sydney,a car, a moterbike and kit my place out.
the down of the job is that you cant go out side of back of house areas when you are not on shift,
you either stay in the commen area which is maybe a basketball field in size which has sofas, canteen, pool table and staff bar.
your room which is tiny im sure smaller then most dorm rooms in a colege usually shared with someone in single beds, i had my girlfriend there so we shared and made a double.
or the staff extirior area which is small tucked on the side underneath the lifeboats and not seen by guests.
very fun job you meet some awesome people and work hard but in port you party and have a blast.
i loved it for about a year and a half then it became tiresomeand i wanted some stability, with my resume i now work at the four seasons in sydney as a concierge, so it takes you places career wise.
one word of warning even as a bus boy you can meet some real shitty guests, you need to have the service industry body, ducks back and a good smile.

I went on a cruise and talked to a lot of the crew members and seemed like a lot of them were homesick and stuff. Lot of them were foreigners because I guess its good pay and theres no taxes or something.

That would be a sick summer job! I recently went on a cruise and all the cruise crew was stoked to be on board. They said the job was tight and you make some mad cash. I heard that they usually hire people from all over the world though - so it might be tough to get in... its worth a try and what an experience!

It would be a great job, but remember, you have to do your MED's(marine emergency duties) before you step on a ship to work on. If you wanna know more about ships, PM me, im a second year cadet with 3 months sea experience.

from what I saw when I was on one it seems nice for a year or so max, then it's time to move on. everything is right there and provided to you too. some guests can be bitchy, I was on a cruise and I couldn't believe how people would yell at the workers over stupid shit. (12 yr old yelling at the pizza making guy.. wtf?) maybe it's because I'm not used to being "pampered", if you will, like that with anything I want right there for someone to do. to be honest, I hate that feeling as well. anyway, aside from shit guests it could be cool.

i've been on a few cruises and found myself talking to the crew a fair amount, especially waiters. I don't know about the rest of the crew, but he said that they were signed on for a certain amount of time. It was something like he worked 9 months, then had 3 off, then was back on the ship again. I felt bad for him, we were off the coast of Florida, and he told us his wife in Poland had a baby the about a week before he left for his next 9 month period on the ship.
It seems like it would be hard work, but i think it would definitely be a cool thing to do for a little bit. If nothing else, i'm sure you still get to go interesting places and meet some awesome people

It makes me feel like I might as well be worthless. I can get up and get a drink, or wait a minute for a slice of cheesecake or whatever myself haha. I became friends with the people who worked on the cruise. well, not really friends but I'd talk to the room cleaning guy and the waiters and such. they're good people, no need to yell at them.

ha yea guests can be assholes.
we have a job to do and no matter how shitty a guest can be you do everything to help them.
however working in hotels and on the ship there are many ways to fuck with them, i dont agree with it because its pretty much my job to deal with dicks all day but just let it be known people like you who are cool to the crew or hotel staff get better service and stafff will go so far out of thier way.
example this old couple who i became very good friends with told me when we were in london that they had a son working in hotels there but had not seen him for 8 years and had no idea how to contact him so i called every hotel in london and found the guy, it was really good to see there faces when they got back on the ship.bought me a cartier as well so horay for everyone!

if i were to work on a cruise, it would only be from may to the end of august. my friend claims that they hire college students for the summer so if all that is true, then certain cruise lines must hire short term.

working on one for three months would be awesome. like all the people who say it gets old seem like they were on long term job. You would get to see so much stuff and it would be all money straight to the bank because what would u really need to spend money on when ur on a cruise ship.

yea smaller companies hire on 3mth contracts. these are however jobs like bust boys or dish pigs. not great jobs and you dont see tips.
these cruise's are around the med or the carribian. check out celebrity cruises or P&O

a cruise that goes to the carribian would be dope....i honestly wouldn't mind getting paid shit if it meant i could have a good time during times when i was not working....but if the cruise had rules saying workers could only spend break hours in some confined area or that workers could not leave the ship, then i don't think i'd want to work on one
All times are Eastern (-5)
