Skiing On Skis Bigger Than You

Ok im in 7th grade 97lbs and about 160cm tall will skiing 170cm skis be hard, not fun or anything like that if i could get skis that size it would open up a whole new window for getting skis and will give me a ski that will stay with me for maybe 4 years or less, and my mom keeps saying skiing skis bigger than you is not fun... so is it really not fun?

im not an expert on this but, look at all the pro's like simon, sammy, garnier, jacob, jossi, and all them.  they'r skis are all bigger then them. and they' look like they'r having a good time. but they are pro's and they really need the bigger skis for the stability off of jumps and all that jazz.  i would say go for the 170's, i think they would help you improve your skiing.

if you think youre good than do it but if not than long skis are gonna be a pain to control.

i'm guesing you ma has never been on twin-tips; they ski wayyy shorter than regular skis.  also, mounting more towards center rather than traditional makes a huuuge difference and makes the ski feel and ski shorter than if you were mounted farther back.  all of my skis are taller than me, and i wouldn't have it any other way.

Longer = more stability
Shorter = Easier turns, grabs etc..

Once you go longer, you will never go back though..

my skis are 177s, the go above my forhead by about a half inch. a good way to measure for a twin tip at your age about that height, forhead up.

Unless you are planning on not growing anymore, get the 170's and rise to the challenge little dude! Like others said, they'll feel shorter because you will mount more towards the center and you'll adapt to them in no time and be a better skier for it. You might want something soft though, cause you are pretty light.

honestly i think with being so lightweight a 170 might be a little big for you to flex. how big are your current skis? the 170 would definitly give you room to grow into them but i think a 160 would suit you better for now.

I'm 5'11 and I ride 180 park skis, and 183 powder skis.  Though I am wanting to get something longer than 190 for powder.

id say go a little shorter somehing around 160s cuz im around 155cm and 125lbs and im havin trouble butterin and shit with a 158 fuj's (might have sumthin ot do with the mounting position tho fuckin tecchy mounted them waaay back gaper style SOB)

Go with the 170s.  They'll force you to be a better skier, and you'll be able to buy the real models rather than the little kid versions (which have poor construction.)  Plus, If you're looking at something a little on the fat side (90+ waist) they will ski extremely short as they're made with tall tips and tails.

im like 5'7"ish mabye 5'8" and im on 177 walls, they are like an inch taller then me the length isnt a big issue they are fine on everything but they are mad stiff and i think if you buy a bigger ski make sure they will be soft enought

160cm are at my forehead this year so 170cm will be pretty tall i have compared height with me i got maybe 2-3in about my top of my head 160cm or 170cm

grabs are so much easier on longer skis....not shorter skis, because you barely have to move your legs and they will still easily get up to your hands

i would say your weight and skier ability play a bigger role in what length ski you get more than your height does. since your under 100lbs even the softest 170cm ski will probably feel like a 2x4 to you.

my 168's were bigger then me then i went to 175's. it takes some time to get used to and i've definitely almost ate shit a couple times.
but i have never regretted it

I disagree.  As long as you get a ski with a lot of life (e.g. Troublemakers) you'll be fine.  I would shy away, though, from stiffer skis like the Volkl Bridge/Karma or the Rossi Scratch FS

ya im stayin away from 4frnt, volkl, and some other companies im leaning towards line anthem160 or reno tahoe170 or reno fast fries160    if i decide i go 170 ill go tahoe if i dont pron reno fast fries or somethin else maybe anthem or arv

I would think you're about to shoot up in height, weight or both.  You'll grow out of 160s pretty fast.  I had a pair of 165cm Dynastar Concepts as my first twin tips.  Even though I loved them, they got too short after only one season.

165 ski that stiffer, or you could go with a 170 ski thats softer.

I would personally go with the 170 for a few reasons:
Last you longer
They will feel better
More stable
Will help your skiing alot.

those would be perfect for him. get some adult bindings like px12's and you can just transfer those over to your new skis when you outgrow these. you cant beat that price
