Freeride Mountain Bike trails.... need ideas

Well, this summer I am the president of my local freeride club, we have a trail scouted out. I just need ideas for features on the trail.
our other trails have drops, small jumps, a creek gap.
for the new trail I was thinking I would put in a step-up- to drop, a couple doubles, then a long windy ladder section, which would include gaps, drops, and teeters. then ther is another open section which I was thinking would be perfect for some nice dirt jumps.
the last quarter of the trail is through this thick treed section, I was thinking I am just going to build a step up that shots you into the trees and a few small fast double within the trees.
Too any freeriders out there I am wondering if these ideas sound good, and if there is anything that you people like to see in a freeride trail.
thanks
Scott
p.s. my comp was acting up so a copy may be in someone's regional forums. sorry

It all depends on what the terrain is like. Little elevation changes, bends, and trees are all going to affect what will work best for the trail, so my advice would be to go scout it out with the people you're building it with and go from there.

i like the dirt jumps idea becuase most trails around here (vancouver, whistler) are all technical with really long steep root filled hills. i love that stuff but after a good steep section it would be nice to hit some jumps without hiking back up and having to go on another trail. but thats what the whis bike park is for i guess eh?

yah the trail cuts across a cutline, then dives into some trees, then bac into a cutline then into the dark trees.
the grade is between 45 and 20 degrees. we have the general trail cut, all except the first set of trees, problem is I am the only builder in the club this year, and as the acting president I also have a few events to put on, as well as coordinate group rides twice a week.
basicly the first open part is perfect for a nice step up drop, and a couple doubles or tables, then we were thinking of having a triple drop (3 different heights) before blasting into the trees.
it is more or less the trees I am unsure of what to put in. I am quite confident in my ladder building skills,
I am also thinking of maybe putting in a decent sized wall ride with the jump section.
the dark tree section is going to be the single track end, only a few features that are built for high speeds.

Step up to drop for sure (mabye with dj's right after... super flowy), wall ride, down section with like obsticles (rocks, roots...), more dj's for sure, skinnyes, mabye a teeter totter, tuns of flowwy burms and just some shit u think up while your building it. get really reative, like with fallen trees and stuff. you could make it pretty sick.

where I live in central alberta we have no large rocks or roots to build features on, all features are human built and built into the. problem with trees up here is it is all muskeg, so the first tree setcion is going to be all ladders 3-10 feet up. and with me being the only builder i need some ideas. and we are true freeriders, we drive to trails and have trucks waiting to shuttle us to top, we are slackers...

some wierd pivoting teeters, like a slider type thing, and wooden jumps to dirt landings so you can make bigger, smaller gaps
look on raysmtb.com look at their pics and steal rays ideas, their fun as hell

i gotta import all dirt I use (Live in muskeg and rocks) so I tend to lead towards using wood. but the few dj;s we have are killer. they take a long time for us to build though.
but yeah I know what you mean, I think I am going to develop something like whistlers A-line. who knows what the future holds.
and the sliding teeter idea is killer I made one on an old trail and they are sick!

theres a sick nasty trail about 15 miles south of my house in a little town called eagle, really rolling and such, but the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources would never allow anything like the crazy wooden platforms and stuff up in northshore BC because it's a part of a huge state forest. It's a catch-22, wisconsin has a TON of protected land owned by the DNR who keeps it great for snowmobiling, biking, hiking and such. BUT, the DNR doesnt allow people to build permanent structures, and no private landowners that I know of having anything close to BC. I wouldn't have a problem with building platforms and such on the existing trails, but DNR officers have the same jurisdiction in wisconsin as state patrol officers...

i am also thinkng of putting in some wall rides, but am not sure which type
there is the ones which you air in and out, leads to many beatings on behalf of riders,
and then there is the "big berm types" which are simpler to hit but less impressive
and what is your take on teeter drops (teeter to fixed post drop)

I also have another question.
would you rather have a fast flowing trail with small, medium, and one or two large hits, or a choppy one that has only large hits with little flow?

flow all the way. I hate it when i have to stop or slow down.

flow is def better. plus when the trail is first cut and a little soft there wont be as much work you have to keep doing on it from huge ruts from people slowing down alot to hit a certain thing or slowing down after some big drop to hit a ladder section

Building trail takes a ton of work to do it properly, and your idea sounds extremely sick, but almost too ambitious. I would maybe even start with just the trail, get it nice and worked in, and then add stunts as time allows. If what you want to build gets done, that is gonna be a super dope ride.

you could have like a 10 foot ladder drop into a fast berm section leading into some fast gaps, (stepdowns, stepups, stepovers, its all fun) and same as james i live on the shore and am not the biggest fan of technical steep rooty rutted stuff which is what most trails are around here

Ok heres my dream stunt. a step up on to a plat form like 8ft up that rises to like 15 at the end have a teter totter. the end of the teter totter is about 5 ft to the end so when the teter totter lands you can drop off the end. onto a hillside/wooden ramp/pile of dirt or what ever you want as a landing. if you want real long like northshore size you can put a roller coaster between the totter and the start of the platform.
If your going to make a teter totter make shure you keep an eye on it especally if its right before a drop. Teter totters have a bad habbit for ripping appart over time. just keep an eye on it and it will be fine.

nothin better than a solid step up. your idea to make a drop after the step up makes it super tech. how close would the drop be to the step up? back home i have a 8 foot step up ot a boulder to a 10 foot drop. super tech and super sketch if thats what your into.

first of all, really skinny bridges, and teeters are old school, and xc rider stuff. no good trails run them any more extensivley. think flow. jumps, hips, wallrides, and bermed turns are where your focus should lie.

I agree witht the flow.
I know for most people this is ambisious, however looks like I am on shft work, and it is my 3rd trail.
Due to the terain I am useing, ladders are the most feasable option of the middle section. it is going over a foot of skeg. and I would rather not touch it.
teeters are no prob for me, I maintain all of my trails, so nothing ever rots out or pops out of place. I have no rocks to use up here so that step up to drop will be self supporting. I have made a previous sep up to ladder that worked out.
Like I said before, I just need ideas, so far I have built anything I think fit on our trails. And this trail I am going to build should not take too mush effort to put in, the hardest part for me is getting the jumps built, as I cannot drive in dirt, and really have no dirt on sight (mainly river rocks, which do make for good fill).
I am more worrided about ideas for the ladder section, I am going to y off and have a tech section and a fast flat, path for easy rides.

Do you ride Fernie? If so, maybe make a line similar to that one section of aggravated assault, ladder step down, up-down ladder, step up step down ladder, ladder gap, but it sounds like these ideas have been previously discussed, but definitely the step up step down would be sick

Both. I would make a flow trail though if thats your option. A trail with rippin features that you can cruise on and have flow is the best. Though sometimes technicality is fun, so if you can do both I would recommend it. I really enjoy single track with little kickers and banks all over. So fun.

yah i do actually, looks like i might get 3 or 4 days in at the end of june, right before a wedding. haven't biked assault in a few years. my grandparents live in cakato so generally i bike ridgemont a few time then far once or twice.
last two years I missed out in biking down there, work got in the way.
any good trails I should look into when I am there for ideas? Phat Lary's still in decent condition, kids stuff, playground, alt-flight? anything new?

roller coastersish ladders. or put some real time in and make bermy ladders suspended so you can rail.... I dunno my riding style doesn't really account for technal slow paced stuff unless it's like 85 degree roll downs. Or just make gap jumps in the ladders over the rocks! hello death to newbs.

heh, i fell from 20 ish feet on another trail and bounced off the ground. no injury, kinda creepy i wish i had the terrain for a pure dh course, but nothing over a minute or two

Phat Lary's is still really sick, kids stuff is still doin good, playground is gettin kind of haggard, and alt-flight was revamped a little so it's really sick now. Alt-flight has a huge ladder that is step down then step up, all one ladder. Oh and they put in Top Gun a couple years ago. It's a fast jump trail like a bunch of kids above were talkin about. It has some berms through trees and a bunch of step ups, tables, doubles, and stuff like that, so definitely check that out.
Also, Three Kings is off the resort, but it has a dope ladder berm to drop that would be sick to duplicate.

yah i kind of remember top gun vaguely. alt flight sounds pretty sweet now.
I am also thinking of having a warm up area kinda like what they have at the buny hill there, anything new or is it just the skinny log with a few drops.

It's been getting bigger and bigger every year, but they take it down for winter. there are some skinnies still and that log, but now there are more jumps. last year they had a bus to jump on and off of, a huge culvert you could jump over or ride through, and various other jumps. the year before they had a double sided wallride with a step up step down over the top, it was dope

some ideas...
-skiiny to double teeter to drop (smooooth trany) to quick small steep up to foot wide wooden landing to roller coaster skinny.
-skinny creek crossing... so fun
-pump track style trail for a little bit.
