Why can't i pick what to quote?

I use to be able to erase parts of someones post and only quote what i want, now if i try that i get an error message saying "the original post does not contain the text you are trying to quote"  So i have to just quote the whole thing - lame

sometimes that happens to me for no reason at all. I leave the post how it is and it says that

and then I leave the thread, and come back to just reply like normal and it is still trying to get me to quote that person. so I am robbed of posting in that thread

its so you cant manipulate what the person said to make it sound like something different or make it funny by deleting certain words.

Ya but i used to be able to - if someone writes a paragraph and i only want to quote one sentence, i can't anymore
