wouldnt be surprised if it was. hes still young, may not tbe as strong core-wise, and it may give him extra support cause you dont wanna fuckup your back

 that's if there is no friction betweeen snow and skis tho so i,m prolly wron.
 I can see jossi wearing a back stabuiliser aftergetting his back fucked up at joi.

maybe im thinking of something else, but  thought a weight belt was something which those weight lifters wear to support their core (abs and back) to protect their spine

it makes more sense now .. i didn't realize jossi got injured last JOI

by the looks of it, you cant type straight either too

and you see, if it adds weight, it'll only weigh you down in the air... or am i wrong? i donno. it won't help with spinning, either

Speaking as someone pushing 220 pounds, I can say with some certainty that yes, weight does equal more speed.

are you guys serious?  First off a weight belt adds weight. Second, it makes a ton of sense seeing as all the athletes had trouble maintaining speed.  More weight = more speed.  As you add weight its related to volume, while win resistance is area.  So as you add weight, the area for wind resistance increases less than the weight.  So you actually gain more speed, since the new effect of wind resistance is proportunately less that the new force of gravity.  noobs

So yes, if he was having trouble with speed a weight belt would help a lot (probably 20+ pounds to make a big difference)

weight does help you get speed...at my park everyone is like, "yeah I barely make it going straight" so i do one turn and make it fine because I weigh more than 85% of the people o the park. So he could have worn something to try to speed him up.

And you are wrong, more weight=more momentum and you'll carry it longer, the effects it would have in the air are very, very minimal.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out he did wear a weight belt, hes not the biggest person and i know from personal experience that being 20 lbs lighter then anyone else hitting a jump changes the line you need to take a lott. It can go from 4 mellow turns inbetween a jump to 1 or straight line to even clear it.

a weight LIFTING belt wouldn't add that much weight on him.....its for support, if thats true. And from what Ced. said about him hurting his back at JOI, i believe it would help with support in a situation like Jossis.

think of 20 extra lbs on your body that's not secure (as in, attached inside your skin) and imagine trying to spin on to a rail with it.  No.  i'm assuming what your "weight belt" is reffering to is a brace much like a weight lifters belt mentioned above that dissipates force over a greater area of your body, while adding support in a direction laterally.  a knee brace works the same way.  are you guys serious about this 20 pound weight belt thing?  jesus, i would give my right nut if it was true someone like jossi wore weights to gain speed.  it's all about being aggressive.  notice how sammy always has his destination set when he's riding the course.  there's no hesitation.  he just goes, and he clears the shit out of everything.  sure, he's bigger than jossi, but it's about how aggressive you are.  i'm a smaller rider myself, and i frequently up the distances of a lot of the bigger guys i ride with.  i could be wrong, but i'm 99 percent sure your weight belt theory is just a brace.

i was watching a skier cross at my mountain from the lift, and the big fat dude would just blow by everyone on the straightaway.  it was because he was heavier.  gravity pulls him down the mountain faster.  im 222 and its easier for me to hit jumps than my friend whos like 130. 

but i imagine that would be very weird to ski hard with a weight belt.  i doubt he did it, but it would make sense from a physics standpoint

in facts gravity act the same way on someone  twice you size
 teh reason more weight would mean more speed is because of how it affect riction adn toher forms of resistance.
  get a 2 pound ball and let it drop down a sloped surface with no friction and then do teh same with a 10 pound ball and you'll see they reach the bottom with the exact same speed and will take the same amount of time.

WOW this is dumb,a WEIGHTED belt would not make sense, i think the thread maker was thinking aboutt a WEIGHT lifting belt. The kind of one where it is thiker on the back to give support which would make sense since he hurt his back last year.

hahaha, ok people... weight does have an effect on speed, and no being heavier doesn't mean he will get less air. thats like 5th grade physics you're butchering here.

the fact that gravity acts the same on all objects can only be exhibited in a perfect vacuum or frictionless environment. not too many of either out on the slopes. heavier person on the same skis will go faster than a light person on the same skis (on the same snow).

speed was definetly not an issue on that course, at aspen open, i always made the jumps and i am real little,like 110 pounds. but a back support would make sense, everytime i overshot the jumps, my back would hurt so bad.

how the fuck would a WEIGHT BELT help your back? maybe a back brace but a weight belt..... it is a belt that has weights around it... why do you think small kids cant clear big jumps.. because they are not heavy enough to gain enough speed. if he wore a weight belt it would be for speed not for support. if anything it would hurt him because his muscles wouldn't be use to the extra weight and he would probably get hurt more easily. i was very surprised by the dumbness of some of these posts.

This thread is talking about a weight lifting belt. Those are used for support. Most are leather and strap in the front around the waist. This thread does NOT have anything to do with a WEIGHTED BELT to make him heavier. Honestly people. Read for fucks sake

I wouldn't be suprised if he wore a belt to add more weight, at joi 2 years ago I think he was struggling to get enough speed to clear it.

and weight does make a difference to speed, it doesn't really matter about the theory, just straight line down a slope with someone who weighs 20kg more or less than you and see who ends up at the bottom faster. I only weight about 60kg and my mate is probably about 80ish. I'm the better skier and on freshly waxed skis, hes on rentals. going through the park I have to almost go into a tuck to get enough speed to clear it while he can put a turn in.

from the title of this thread i would strongly disagree with you. not only does it not make sense to wear a weight lifting belt in a comp when there are other forms of braces for support, but a weight belt sounds like a belt with weight on it.
