My ski building Journal.

So, my skis are finally nearing completion. Or at least nearing the point of nearing completion. Ok, I have one hell of a lot more to do, but heres what I have so far:

All the materials are accounted for.
All tools are accounted for.
I have laminated a pair of cores.
I have just built the core profiler.
I have mostly designed the graphics. (Ok, Ok... so it was my om who did that... but they are badass.)

What I have left to do:

Profile the core.
Build a mold.
Cut out bases/fiberglass/tip spacers/edges/etc.
Layup


I'm probably forgetting something... but oh well.

Oh... yeah... I haven't completely finished the design of the ski yet. It will be symmetrical early rise/rockered  about 140-150 at the tips. 125-135 at the waist. 178 long. I am more or less building a very wide rockered Invader.

Should be interesting.

I'm in school right now, but I can post photos later.

Here's what I have done since my last post:

Finished the core profiler (added grip tape).

Built about half of the mold. (all the tip and tail ribs are done, as are the middle sections.)

I'm stoked.

I'm thinking layup will be on Friday or Saturday. Just in time for my week long break.

thats sick, one of my goals is to build a symetrical pow ski. maybe not quite so fat though.

I have been working hard over the last few days, and it has paid off. Here are the promised pics.
Getting everything perfectly square and aligned has been a real challenge. Although... dealing with my perfectionist/egotistically anal/but in a loveyoudad sort of way, has probably been the real challenge. Still, it really helps to have all the equipment on hand.

So.. had some issues with the core (Tip: MEASURE EVERY DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) So i think I'm going to only lay one ski up.

The good news: Layup is tomorrow. Pics in another few days.

Can't wait to see some pictures.

Is that fiberboard you are using just hardboard?

A tip on bending it.  Clamp it in place and use a blow torch to help it keep the curve.

I use 1/8" hardboard on top of my molds.  Just cut it, clamp in place, spend 15 minutes heating the curved part, and you are done.  I don't even secure it to the mold.

hey.... sorry its taken so long for me to update this thing. and i still wont be uploading a photo. (dialup blows)...  BUUUUUT....



I got one huge, symmetrical, rockered, ski out of the mold. the base is totally screwed up, there are a few bubbles under the topsheet, and the edges didnt bond in a few places. I also used WAY too much epoxy. oh... and the rocker relaxed too much...


despite the screwups, im totally stoked. i know what to improve now.

nice dude.. we had some, okay a lot, of screw ups on our first ski, so hopefully we can fix the kinks too.. good luck with your second ski.
