Snowboarder Dead at Tremblant

I searchbarred it, but couldn't find anything, apparently it happened about two weeks ago in the tremblant park, it was the guy's first run of the season, and he decided to try and take off on the first jump and land on the second jump's landing....i just heard this today from a friend at NSIA, if you have more info on this, post it

That's such a shame.
A person was killed at my mtn. (Stevens Pass, WA) 2 Saturdays ago.  Such a shame, he hit the biggest jump in the park and the snow was just weeeird that day and it was almost impossible to know what speed to hit it at, or even get to that speed and stay there.  I hurt my neck on it an hour an a half before he was killed, think he died on site too. 

It's always terrible to hear about people dying in parks.  We have park passes too.

yeah, it was in the smaller park on tremblant's north side (tremblant has an XL park on the south side requiring a $15 park pass). there's a two jump line that tremblant built, both jumps with about 10 foot decks, but big and built with unnecessary amounts of snow... as in 15-20 feet high of snow on top of the actual run for a 10 foot jump. it's actually quite strange.
anyhow, the kid tucked in from the very top of the run, way, way past where the informal drop in point is. he completely overshot the landing, way into the flats, closer to the takeoff of the second jump than to the landing of the first. it's gross to even think about. in terms of blame... i'd say the jumps are deceivingly small for how much snow is involved, but the poor guy simply booked it in with far far too much velocity.

Yea its not possible but this isnt the first time its happened either...a guy at breck tried it and of course didnt make it and broke pretty much every bone in his body....i think it was 2 or 3 years ago, correct me if im wrong but i think thats when and what happened

but that said, people are fucking idiots.
 is it going to come to the point where to get a park pass youll have to sit these kids down and explain what it means to run through a jump lane without hitting the feature and properly speed check. this is happening too fucking often.

hitting a jump first run of the day isn't too wise, hitting a jump first run of the season is idiocy, trying to gap to the next jumps landing... if that's true i dont know if i can feel sorry for the guy.

dude i was @ tremblant last weakend and kno exactly what jumps you're talkin about.

The jumps are only like 10 feet ... but the landings were nice and steep and long. I could totally see some1 booking it from the very top ... and just mangling themselves trying to double up the jumps.

That's terrible. A friend of ours did the exact same thing 2 days after Christmas this past year. The only difference is he started where they told him to and just had too much pop. He ended up w/a concussion, bruised ribs, and a bunch of other BS.

The park guy we talked to was really sketched out about it. Tremblant's management is really scared about being sued since the RCR incident. The guy was probably spooked about his job, too.

I really think that there should be legislation put in place to protect ski resorts from liability in park accidents but at the same time impose certain park pass measures that will cost a whole lot less than their insurance... dunno.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but nothing of this sort has even happened at an RCR resort. They did it preemptively.

Sorry to hear that they are dead. Some risks are can be lessened, and if you don't take the steps to do that, then you have to be prepared for the consequences.

The incident I'm referring to is the removal of the parks, not the guy being sued. You guys should find something better to do than argue over symantecs.

100% agreement man I was there a couple weeks ago and those jumps are retarded.  require so much speed to get up the mountain of snowmaking and so little to make the tiny gap. too complicated a speed calculation for the beginner park

according to my friend who was there, the guy tucked from the top of the mountain and hit the spoon of the second kicker, basically, it was like hitting a wall. Apparently he was not a beguinner though. So he got 2 broken arms AND legs, his spine also broke...so an helicopter rushed to tremblant to take him to an hospital and the guy died from an internal bleeding before reaching the hospital whitch is very predictable, they took it in a helicopter cause the patroll couldnt do anything because i assume the guy got more ripped doing that than jumping off the WTC.

The Government should help out though - the government protecting the businesses means a bigger return in tax dollars. In Vermont their is a law of some sort protecting resorts from lawsuits(not sure of exact details). In VT i would argue however that they are also protecting their heritage because skiing has been there for a long time.

True, but the government should take action to prevent wasted time and money that goes into ridiculous, uncalled for lawsuits (especially when the defendant, who is 100 percent in the wrong, wins)

agreed. death of the park or at least jumps is sooon. Unless they start posting SPEED INDICATORs with an appropriate speed to weight ratio to clear on every jump...with a log of each jump and a recommended jump rate chart at the top and even then it's left to scrutiny and debate and subjectivity cause NONE of us ever read anything posted.... and that is pretty much impossible to even set up I think or even acurate...but we'll see when these liability suits start piling up and resorts are forced to start protecting themselves before they start to protect us.

i havbe friends that told me about it.. i ski at tremblant and after i heard about it.. i looked at the two jumps more carfully and it doesnt make any sens that he tryed that!!! the gap is ridiculously huge!!! bbut ne ways.. r.i.p. dude..

yes this is true and i am pretty sure the jumps are bigger than 10 feet, but i haven't been since the beginning of the season, so that could have changed

shouldn't you do a run through of the terrain park so you know how much speed you need off each jump before actually trying them on your second or third run?

Sorry to quote only you, as I wanted to quote both you and the person you quoted but I don't think that's possible.

I hope you are willing to pay 100 - 150 dollars for a lift ticket.  I know I'm not.  What you are saying isnt impossible.  No not at all, but it is expensive and unnecessary. 

Its sad that people feel the government are the ones that should always be protecting them, especially for things such as this.  Its also this kind of attitude that will see the eventual death of terrain parks.

Put blame where blame is due.

No, the burden is on the government to provide adequate legal certainty and a 'reasonable duty of care' plays out in the case law a million different ways in a million different situations ranging from cleaning floors to building terrain parks.

It is my belief that the duty of care for a ski resort operating a terrain park should be clarified by statute. That is to for the legislature to say: this is the legal test for determining whether a ski resort with a terrain park in particular has breached it's duty of care. This may include rebuttable presumptions: for example if the resort checks the conditions in the park and posts appropriate warnings there will be a presumption that there is no breach until proven otherwise. 

I don't believe in the government dicking around in our lives but I do believe it is absolutely necessary for there to be a certain level of legal certainty to encourage growth in the world of freestyle snowsports.  I mean we are looking for solutions to a problem which yes, may lead to the downfall of terrain park skiing but also result in tragedies like the one that started this thread.

We need to help regulate... if you see someone trying something dumb like this, cut them off and yell at them for being a fucking retard.  

Too many deaths will bring terrain parks to their knees.  

Is this 100% confirmed to be true?   I know for a fact that many stories of deaths  you hear at resorts are untrue... especially in the East.

he wasnt trying to gap to the second jump. it was his 4th run of the first day of his season and he didnt knwo the speed of the jump so he ended up overclearing a 15 foot jump by 70 feet landing on his head. he died being transferred to a different hospital. Because of this st bruno( the mountain i ski at) took off its jumps but is putting them back up with a park pass.

rip.  i dont beleive that you can clear a 15 foot jump by 70 feet. unless they had a huge inrun, its not possible.  man. think about simon, he overshot a 80 footer by like 200 feet, way lucky hes not dead.
