Advantages of short/long skis.

I ride park almost every day and im looking at the new ar6's but i was just wondering wut the advantages and disadvantages of short and long skis. im about 5'5. thanks alot guys.

Well, it all depends where you are going to be using them for the majority of your time. Longer skis are more stable at high speeds whereas I've heard people say that they find park easier with a shorter ski. I'm not too sure about the last point as I've always used a 176 ski all around. I've even heard some people say that they find spinning easier on a short ski, but that sounds more like a mounting placement issue.

Basically, if you intend to bomb the mountain at high speeds I'd suggest going with a longer ski. If you weigh about 140~ish (just guessing by your height) I'd go with about a 172-176 ski. Longer even if you intend to center-mount them because a center mounted ski will behave like a shorter ski

long skis
a lil bit harder to spin, higher swing weight
much better stability
i find in the pipe a longer ski pops u more
more pop
holds speed better

short skis
easier to spin
easier on rails
not as stable
less pop

sum1 may disagree with the more pop, but thats just the way ive noticed it

i personally love longer skis
not as good for trees
but better in anthing else. i dissagree they are better on rails

ive always skied a big ski, im 5' 6.5" and im on a 177 so ive always loved a big ski and still do.
 i have switched skis before with friends and little skis are soo low !
 

Long:
-more pop
-much more stability land of from rails and jumps
-easier on rails (my opinion)
-way more style spining jumps and spining on and off rails

Short:
-less pop
-way less control
-harder on rails
-makes spining look like shit (enless you can tweek some sort of grab and youra steezy skier)

wut i mean by easier on rails for shorter skis is that u don't really need a the pop or stability u get from a long ski on a rail/short ski. when ur on a rail, all u want it less ski to fuck around with u maneuvers, u dont really need a ton of pop, plus less ski means less to balance on the rail. the above kid has a point, if u want to stomp rails and boxes, get a long ski, but a short ski will allow u to swup and 450 roun it a lil easier.

really its all ur preference

most expert skier ride longer skis, so if ur lookin to push ur game, get a longer ski

my opinion: im 5' 8" n 165 lbs, i like my skis tween 175-180cm

yo thanks for ur suggestions i think im going to go with the armada ar6 and ive narrowed it down to the 171's or 176's.

like a happy medium. im 6 foot and ride 176's. theyre right up to my eyebrows. im also a feather weight so i dont need a real long ski for stability.

if u can, demo them

if u weigh more than 150, go with the 176s

if ur light, like naturally thinner, a good way to kno this is if u put on muscle easy or not, easy means uve got bigger bones probs, and more weight, if ur light, go 171

if ur still growin 176

I have found that longer skis force you to be a better skier.  You might get tossed around a little at first, but soon you'll learn to control your skis and your body much better.

Also, the sidecuts of most skis are designed around the medium to medium-long length (175 or 180 usually.)  Unless a ski has a different sidecut for different lengths, it will perform its best at that size.
