I am making my first ski film this year the plan is non profit i am not going to sell any dvd's just give them away. Does this make it possible not to pay for copyright songs because i am not making money on other peoples work. Now the other question is that i might be getting a sponsor for the movie a realitivly big name if i get stuff from them will i need copyright agreements?

well just cite the songs and artists and stuff just to be safe. but i reckon that since youre not making any money and cite them just to be safe you should be ok

hahahahaha if only it worked that way...
Using songs without rights doesn't stop 80% of people who sell their movies on NS, so you probably won't get in any trouble.

make sure u give all the credits that due to the artist, legally speaking, if ur not sellin it, u dont have to worry about paying royalties

i think if you just ask the band then theyll be chill, its mad exposure for the band, i didnt know fischerspooner until tbc and now i have a ton of their songs, i dont know why a band would not want their songs in a persons video unless there total dicks

you just gotta put them at the end of the movie in the credits if ur not sellin them...or give em fer a "set donation" and donate the money to some good fund...thats what we did...

depends on the sponsors view on it I guess.... I would like to think that most sponsors would make it a requirement, but I know that's not the case.

perhaps legal advice from newschoolers.com is not such a great idea. I mean 90% of the people on this site can't legally drive

hahahaha the artists cant ever do anything about it.
Its not the artists, its what record company and producers own their rights.
I deal with this shit all the time. Just credit the musicians and you will be fine.
The fact that its non profit means they cant do anything.
Plus, even if you did sell your dvd, you wouldnt be worth enough for them to get money out of it. basically if they sued you they would loose money paying the lawyers getting your money.
So you will be good no worries.
when you do have to deal with it, be prepared for the biggest pain in the ass people ever.
Dealing with record labels and music rights is like the most frustrating thing in the world.
ha hope that helped man
take care and good luck

so you could sell a low key movie and not really have to worry about it too much?

You wouldnt have to worry about it at all.
Like they cant even sue you for the amount of profit you made off the movie, and most likely your not going to make like 50 grand off your movie so its not even worth it for the people that own the music rights.
