Boot Idea

Well, I'm not sure if this has been done but It occurred to me a while ago. For those of us that get shin-bang or just like tighter fitting boots why don't companies just create a boot thats specific for people with these problems. It's basic thinking, Im surprised it hasn't been done. First, have the cuff a size smaller than the boots actual size. so it will fit your lower leg tighter while allowing your foot the ability to actually breathe and have blood running through it. Also have the cuff run as long as the size of the shoe, so its not awkward fitting on your leg, even have it run an inch or so higher just enough so it doesn't interrupt calf movement. Also, the booster strap thats been incorporated into Nordica boots should be incorperated times 2 to the new boots. Like on top of one strap another would be below it on the cuff but only pulling in the liner so there would be holes in the cuff. I know the idea need alot of work, but i believe they would be very helpful to the boot industry. What do you think?

making ski boots like snowboard boots would never work....i think people just need to live with what we got

It will never happen. I think that most problems lie in the softenss of the liner and how the person skis. I think that the shells are great and as good as they will ever be.

Booster straps, shin eliminators, no more back seat landings seem to be the only solutions.

This is very true in prevention, but i have made a prototype boot that has to straps on the cuff. one at the top of the liner and one in the midpoint of the shin. It gives the liner a tighter fit that allows the shell to become tighter and more fitting. Also, snowboard boots have a liner with a draw string mechanism that locks into place with a clip, I think the ski boot industry could benefit hugely from that.

have you had a boot fitted by a bootfitter?  I had to get a lot of work done on mine before they fit, but afterwards, no shin bang/loose heel/problems at all.  I'd save all the cash you can and spend it on some boots you'll keep for years--that means investing in custom footbeds/shell blowouts/heated or custom liners.  It is absolutely worth it in the end, more worth it that buying shitloads of skis when your boots are the problem.

Impossible.  Ski boots need to be laterally stiff, whereas snowboard boots do not.

With a snowboard, you energy is transferred froward and backward.  It is easy enough  for your body to retain control when leaning forward because it is the natural movement of the ankle, and when leaning backward, it is easy to spread pressure between the leg, boot and binding.

The energy transfer in skiing is side to side.  This is not a natural movement for any part of you body and thus requires more support.  Also, because a skiers legs are independent and centered in relation to the ski,  there is more torque on the ankle during twisting movements suck as crashes.  Again, more support is needed.

Soft-shell boots were an attempt at bridging the gap between ski and snowboard boots.  While they provided enough support to protect the average user from ankle injury, they did not allow as much lateral energy to be transmitted between the leg and the ski; a skier would need to put out more energy to get the same result.

Sounds like that could work.

Have you seen the new Atomic boots? They have that liner system and booster straps built in.

Haha, after I made the thread I saw the tradeshow with them, such a good idea...i hope it catches on. 
Bootfitters....I've tried it, and it misrablely failed I was talked into buying a boot a size to small 2 times believe the first time that a race style fit (according to him) would cure shinbang and the second time that getting it that much smaller it would pack out alot (after 3 month of riding at least 3 to 4 times a week they never packed out and left my foot numb every day). I dunno, i just think theres alot of technology out there now that can be utilized.
