Western Michigan University.....

Just going through precollege planning since im injured and bored out of my mind.  But Ive recently been looking at WMU as a possible choice for mechanical/material engineering.  I currently live in Iowa and desperatly want to leave to go either west or north for college so i can get some real snow.  How legit is WMU what other colleges do you guys suggest?

I am going to WMU right now..its definitely a good school for the fields your looking into...kalamazoo is a pretty cool college town to live in..lots of parties, tons of hot girls and lots of good nug...but the only downside is there really is no place good to ride around here except for a little hill called bittersweet, only 350 vertical feet haha...cool place for school but not the place for riding really.

Its for sure not the best place to be in Michigan if you want to ski. For engineering, U of M is your best bet. For skiing something in the UP is your best bet. I know a bunch of people that go to Western that seem to enjoy it though.

I'd say Tech is better than U of M for engineering, but that's just going off what I've heard. I haven't looked into the numbers.

WMU is kinda cool, it's like 15 mins from my house so i'm there alot. Student life is ok, comparable to most big schools. Nothing on state tho haha. I hear campus is kinda broad and spread out so it can be a pain in the winter. It's still a good school though, and it's getting alot bigger and better with the Kalamazoo Promise.

I have a lot of friends that go to WMU so i'm up there a lot and it's a lot of fun. Hot girls and fun parties but they are kinds of in the ghetto but nothing too dangerous. Bittersweet is allright, for michigan. i havn't been there in a while but if my mind hasn't failed me i remember them having a pretty decent park. Tech is a good school too but it is in the middle of shit nowhere. the town is nice, nothing around it though for miles and miles. For what you want as far as education too is sounds like its the best school in michigan too.

I've actually heard Tech isn't that great of a school. Michigan has one of the top engineering schools in the country and Michigan States is ranked ahead of Tech too I think. The skiing up there is sick though. For Michigan anyway.

Hmm i dunno, i thought it was one of the best engineering schools around the country. That's all from word of mouth tho so who knows. I do know michigan has a balla one if you can get into it though, good luck.

Woah! I totally go to school there. They've actually got a really good engineering program and its a sweet place if you like lots of hot girls and big parties but the skiing is very sub par. I go about 3 hours north every weekend just to get decent skiing. If you want to go to a really good engineering school and have sweet skiing (for the midwest at least) I would suggest Michigan Tech. Its in the town that I am originally from and as long as you don't mind a little smaller town and not a whole lot of girls it is a sweet school. Check out www.skimontripley.com (5ish minutes from campus) and www.mtbohemia.com (45ish minutes from campus). And about 2 hours away is Marquette Mountain which has no questions asked the best all around midwest terrain park. Any other questions about Western or Tech feel free to hit me up.

Houghton isn't a "little smaller town"... that would describe Harbor Springs- without Tech, Houghton wouldn't exist anymore.  i would not recommend going there unless you really dig complete isolation.  i was in Marquette for a few years and have some buddies who have either gone to Tech or are still there and only one of the dozen or so likes the school and intends on finishing there.  the complaint my other friends have?  there's nothing to fucking do there.  if you like hanging out with dudes all the time and take broomball more seriously than life itself, MTU is the place for you... if you actually want to have a good college experience, though, i'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Here's the deal...I go to tech and im in the engineering program, its good, but definitly not the best. Same can be said about the skiing...if you're into waiting for dumps and just skiing trees, tech is perfect, but if you want a good park go to northern...If you're really going to school just to ski, head out west...Im from Kzoo originally and grew up skiing bittersweet. The park can be alright, mostly boxes and rails, but it gets crowded as shit on the weekends with all the hoosiers.

Yeah, WMU is a pretty good school for engineering, we just recently (past few years) built a new engineering campus.  Kalamazoo is pretty fun, there a a ton of student organizations and plenty of clubs that you can join to meet people.  The crowd here is pretty laid back and the party scene is...off the chains. The closest ski hills are Timber Ridge and bittersweet.  I prefer Bittersweet to timber Ridge though because of the type of crowd thats there and Bittersweet has a high speed lift.  The park is pretty fun though, usually 2-3 jumps, a quarter hit, and about 8-10 rails/boxes.  The WMU ski/snowboard team has a spring break trip every year for a pretty good price, this year its a week in Tahoe staying at The Block for like $600. Any other questions you got, feel free to ask.

I'm liking what i see.  I'd rather move out west to Colorado, but most of their big schools have mad expensive out of state tuition, but this place looks pretty sweet. I could always go to Iowa State, but I've heard some bad things about it. How much snow does Michigan usually get?

depends. The kzoo area has had up to like a foot and a half a few times, and then it melts, and then it snows again, and melts..so on and so forth, it's been happening alot this winter.

The UP is one of the snowiest places in the country. The west side of the state gets some huge storms because of Lake Michigan.

We have had a pretty good winter so far, with the usual warm spells, but right now we have about 8-10 inches on the ground, we got rocked pretty hard last night.  Setup a couple of rails in the yard and did a night sesh, it rawked. A usual winter we can get anywhere from 50 to 150 inches, it all depends on how many pushes we get coming out of Canada going across the lake to bring us lake effect.  our average is 90".
