SKI MOVIES ARE CHEATED DO TO COMPETITIONS....RIGHT?

let the whining begin about this and that....bottom line, the snowboard mentality is ten times that of skiers in regards to film segements. name one professional skier who films from november to june with one company....that's 8 months kids, not a couple days here and there. ski movies are gay compared to snowboard movies.

and as you hate, i spelled "do" wrong.give it up and prove me wrong about the film segments. IDEA is a snowboard film ten years ago.

our sport is so fucked up right now. skiers can't afford to make just
video segments, therefore we get movies with a bunch of mediocre
segments because the skiers in the film are spending most of their time
training to make skrilla from comps. this is the companies fault as
well, look at fucking salomon. pretty much every skier they sponsor is
a comp skier, they are basically saying that video segments don't
matter (to a certain extent). that is fucking b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t.
this
is the reason why a lot of amateur movie companies are making movies on
par with pro movies. they are spending a lot more time with the
athletes to show their true potential whereas a lot of pro movie
companies will only shoot certain athletes for a couple of days at a
park shoot in the spring (eg: level 1 keystone segments).
also
there should be some sort of unspoken rule that a movie cannot be
released until it is truely finished. a lot of skateboard films take 3
years to make and that is why the movie is amazing from start to finish.
film makers, here is the key to your success in making a movie that matters:
*hate warning*hate warning*hate warning*hate warning*hate warning*hate warning*
*if you are one of those: stop the hate, love love love kinda guys, GTFO*
1)
riders: either on the same team, or same crew...as simple as that. no,
sammy carlson does not ski with darren rhalves (fuck you if you quote
me on this and say they ski together on occasion, it's an example
pussy).
2) no park shoot segments: use the best of the shots
gotten at the park shoot so it's not just a lazy compilation of the
same footage over and over. (15 minute keystone montages? are you
serious?)
3) do not rush a movie: if the product doesn't feel
finished it's not. go film for an extra year or 2 to save the sport
from mediocre movies. (ready fire aim comes into my mind here, i
honestly don't give a fuck if you disagree)
4) no same tricking spots!!!: if someone has already slid the rail you are shooting in another movie, you MUST
up the trick that was done before you. it's one of the most important
rules that has never existed in skiing. (unless you guys don't want to
take steps ahead?)
5) legitimacy: shovel stairs, don't cut out
switch landings in powder, if a trick is ugly as fuck keep it the fuck
out of your movie.
6) small jumps onto handrails: this needed
it's own category because every fucking pro company disobeys this rule.
imagine seeing a picture of a skateboarder with a ramp jump onto a
handrail, the image in my head of that is roughly the same as the image
i get from picturing a pro skier handrail setup. hey kids, let's start
calling out the companies! (seriously though...it needs to be done)
oh ya, there are definitely more, but once people start
following those rules i think that companies will want to spend more
money on movie segment skiers and movie companies so our sport can
become legit. yay!

calling ski movies mediocre is totaly fucked up.
they re doing a great job.
maybe some improvements are needed but stop the fucking hate and go watch snowboard movies if you re not happy.
as long as i m having a good time watchin the movie i dont care if the rail has been hit 2 years before.
what s important in a movie is the atmosphere, the level of stoke, and the rider s style.
watching plehouse and level 1 is always a good time for me.
for that i m thankfull.
and i dont hate on what s my favorite dvd to watch.
keep on improving.
but dont listen to the whiny bitches.

hahaha, i liked that. i have to say though that level 1 does stick quite close to those rules and they make the best films imo so it could be true.
however even though some snowbord comanys do film the way suggested in this post i don't always agree that it makes for a better movie. i haven't seen a major board film for a couple of years but i felt that less new mdp films were not a any better than poor boyz ones at the time. probably are now though cos pbp seems to be getting less good.

I think ski movies are awesome, my first taste was Level 1 with "Shanghi Six", Posibly the best film I've ever seen... props to level one for that, what about Level 1's "real time" six months That's commitment tbh other fim makers could learn allot from the guys at Level 1

question: who hates on a movie just cause it doesnt have the original cast? the movies are made to entertain and inspire, not to show off the same people every time. i bet if i cared enough right now i could do some research and name plenty of snowboard movies that do the same thing. i see this thread as a lame excuse for cocky snowboarders to hate on skiiers

I totally agree with this whole thread!!! LIke the dude said above, most skate companies spend a number of years making their films, and then they are racked full of awesome segs, no repeat tricks, and crazy spots. All the skaters like to skate together, hence a lot of team videos.. the new Lakai movie is dope! and those guys got each other stoked through out the whole thing to try tricks that they normally wouldnt have done..........................
I havent bought a ski movie for a few years. but i bought PICTURE THIS this year and its pretty awesome, and i buy skate films all the time!
Someone needs to teach theses guys to get with the program of progression and step it up

yea i kinda agree with u on most points but also there isnt enough money to not make a movie for those companies for a eyar or two they need the money from teh year before so they can make the next years movie...but also peter olenicks segment in yea dude? i think was pretty fucken weak all it had was him doing basically flat 5's and leading tail spins

haha who fucking cares. get off snowboard's dick and go out and do your own thing. jesus you all sound like a bunch of whiney bitches who blame snowboarding and society for your shittyness.

some legit points being made here, but the one about shooting crews/ people that ski together cannot always be applied and to say that it is always the case in snowboarding is bullshit too.
Take standard films for example- catch the vapors or draw the line: you really think jeremy jones rides with kokubo or fredi k? no. they represent completely different aspects of the sport which, when combined in a movie, showcases the sport as a whole. epic.
if you only film one crew e.g. pnw, you get a completely different style of film as all the riders do similar stuff (which is fine btw). if you're msp and you want to make a movie that shows all aspects of freeskiing, of course you have segments from eric hjorleifson, james heim etc even though they never ski with colby west or sammy c...
thats all, otherwise, good points.

bottom line is the ski industry is the ski industry, they do what they have to quit whining about how u dont get the movie u could because colby had to go get money so he wasnt living in his car

copy that.
I though realtime was pretty dope, it was a great format, really great cinematography, great sound track, and a superb performances from all the skiers.

no but it did have (pretty much)5 or 6 pow segments back to back and a segment dedicated to one singular jump. not to say that it was a bad movie, just not as good as you make it sound. and the music was way worse than realtime imo, well except the song of the copper section i think it is, y'know"...i shoveled snow with an icecream cone, you said leave me alone..." that ones pretty much unbearable. and well yeah a tit like you would call me emo cos it's the easiest label for you to aply.

agreed. the same-tricking spot rule deserves its own thread. although it's kind of hard to transfer a rule like that from skateboarding to skiing, because there are way more variables in skateboarding, so it's easier to do something different. it should still be a goal though.

yeah yeah snowboard movies are sick and all, but why do you have to use them as an example of what us skiers should do? don't worry about it and do your own thing...

i don't think thats strickly true just think about the way antoine gagnier, andy parry, garrett russel and the such shred stuff, there are so many different ways to grind and grab and spin that not many people do.
people think there is no room for creativity in skiing when in actuall fact there is.

I'm so over all the park hate. If there's anything worse than a park rat its a condescending douchefuck sweet pow shredder. Some people enjoy skiing in - and watching people ski in - the terrain park. Who doesn't have fun in a sick park on a sunny day with their buddies? Its like the skiers' equivalent of 3rd graders at recess. You play on the same shit every time and yet each time brings you unbridled joy and excitement. I really don't understand why anything in the BC or involving pow immediately trumps the park. Both are necessary components.

CAPSLOCK IS ANGRY RIGHT?
anyways, thats true but ski movies showcase allot more people and things. So many different styles within skiing. And allot of movie crews do shoot with certain riders allot and travel with them...Pete O and Poor Boys, Level one has like a feature crew each year with standout riders. Being original is becoming played.

i agree with the last sentence, but think about a handrail on skis vs. a skateboard. presses on skis are barely legitimate at this point, but lets say you can nose and tail press a rail, (and maybe do 2 more rollerblade grinds?). That's being generous. Skateboarders have nose/tail/rail slides, 50/50, 5/0, nose grind, crooked grind, feeble grind, smith grind, salad grind, and the list goes on. Kickflip or heelflip on and you've multiplied the possibilities times 3. There are simply more degrees of freedom in skateboarding. Not to say skiing shouldn't try to follow the same code of honor in film segments, but you've got to cut us a little slack.
One thing that's nice about rider segments instead of location segments is that the repetition doesn't stand out as much. If one guys does a cab 7 off the same step down two segments later, instead of two clips later, it doesn't seem as bad. Realtime was sick, but it seemed to have more problem with repeating tricks because of the format.

Maybe Theory-3 should just get better sponsors? Let me look at this... you've got Head, Salomon, Carrera, Atomic, etc. It's no wonder they don't cut you any slack.
On another note, I think everyone needs to get over worshipping snowboard videos. It seems like on NS they're exempt from criticism because snowboarding is cooler than skiing. I've seen just as many repetitive, half-assed, bad snow videos as ski ones. Even now, when trick snowboarding has been around so much longer, there's still unnecessary bullshit out there like Apples & Oranges, Isenseven, and so on.

You know how many more spots there are in skating then skiing?

hahaha so much hate going on it seems that you dont even enjoy watching ski movies.
you have no fucking idea how hard it is to make a ski movie.
tanner hall said he was loosing money with his film, and his films are realy dope.
so imagine if you can loose money with dope movies...
i just have to give mad props to all the crews, from rage to plehouse, pbp, level 1, msp, tgr, wwprod(candide) just to name a few, for making dope movies every year, and make me want to go skiing.
why arent you stoke on the level of talent gathered in ski movies, from the rider to the film maker, including cameramans, photgraphers etc..
and why dont you start a company if you are so going to make better movies than every one ?

which is why skiing sucks and thats what he was saying about salomon.
so, what if they pay you another years bugdet to film for one extra year and your movie is actually GOOD? has anyone in the ski industry actually given this a shot? i hear rumours of henrik lampert part of a multi year ski project. im not sure if it's a movie, but if it is, i bet it will top that years ski movies.
