"Ice Coast"?

Everyone knows why the East Coast has been nicknamed the Ice Coast, but I really want to know why. Is it because there is more moisture in the snow? Or are the temps colder?

No. I've never skied there. This thread is a total joke and complete waste of space.

I want to know WHY the snow turns to ice. By that, I mean the scientific reasons/

higher water content in east coast snow+man made snow with high water content

i bet it also has some to do with all the traffic too since the east has tiny mountains (mostly) compared to out west there are fewer trails that get the same amount of people on them so more snow gets scraped off/packed down. the man made snow is probably the biggest issue though since its almost little ice pellets itself

if you lived in teh eact you would know we got a quarter inch of freezing rain last night and today.  Its also cause the conditions are a;ways icy

no matter how much snow we have on the east or how nice the snow can be it will ALWAYS turn to ice. It will warm up fir a day then it will get all melty and wet then freeze over night and bam your stuck with ice until you get another snow storm.

it is skied over by so much traffic then fake snow is put over and man made is actually little ice peices
 usually from heating up but most of the time when its been cold its just from the big amounts of man made snow that they put on thehills.

lower altitude, higher moisture content in the air, less snow, more rain, colder weather, more people.

the massive amount of moisture in the snow, combined with a thaw/freeze cycle leave all of our trails like skating rinks

constant tempurature fluctuations, the snow is fine until either rain, or the temp gets over freezing and melts the snow then it freezes again, creating a layer of ice on top of the snow
