There are just so many more genres and artists now a days, compared to say even 10 years ago
and smaller bands that aren't neccessarily "Big" label bands is what kids want to listen too. and there are sooooo many of those types of bands, the cd sales get spread out like crazy, those stats include albums and songs baught off of itunes and others.
Illegal downloading does have to do with it....

yea its still in the dumps. major labels are taking chunks of merch and tour sales, which in the past they usually didnt touch, to make up for poor cd sales. fortunately labels big and small are still signing acts so its completely gone down the shitter.

and yea the 4 big labels, universal, EMI, WEA and SONY are having mad issues. just look at thursday, thrice and story of the year, new found glory, radiohead who all left major labels and returned to indie labels or remained labelless. big news.

im on the same boat. im about to finish my university degree and im tyring to drum professionally, im going to be possiby hooked up with a friend who( shall remain nameless) whos generating some major label interest but im like is this really gonna work out, or is this really the smart thing to do? its scary stuff. but the good (or bad?) thing is that if i ever did sign a contract, it would be as a musician being hired by the label or manager to play live shows and record, so i wouldn't be as tied down as the signed artist..but thats just one side of it i guess....
