I have a pair of k2 4 speed poles my stepdad bought them then told me i could have them. But theyre too tall for me i ski with short poles i tried to get the grip off to cut them but the grip wouldnt come off. Anyone know how to get the grips off the 4 speeds?
get a bucket of boiling water, and then put the grip side of the pole in the bucket, let them sit for awhile...half an hour at least, that will make the glue become less sticky. keep adding more boiling water though, the water can become cool pretty fast, especially in the winter then take a wrench and pull as hard as you can on the grips, they should come off. then to cut it, get a hacksaw and a pipe cutter blade, and you should be fine, just measure and cut away!
or you put the shaft in a vice and pull like hell, make sure there are no screws in the grip anywhere, sometimes there are pressure screws that keep them on.
awesome i think ill do the boiling water thing. does anyone know how far down you can cut the poles since they get slightly narrower? and will the grips glue stay or do i have to put new glue on it?
ok so heres some poles ive made, i cut them way down but then again they are just regular poles and im not sure how "complex" of poles you got. my grips just stay on with friction, no screw or glue or anything, so im not really sure about re-gluing yours. hope that helps...
yeah, sometimes their are screws in the grips, so if you rip them out, bad news...but the boiling water one will work, damn i wish all poles were like the armada pole system poles, or the scott ones, too bad those are super expensive
dont use glue casue then youll never get them off again. the best thing to use is actually hair spray. sray the top of the shaft just before you put the grips back on then jam the grips on all the way. the hair spray will lube the shaft (teehee) when you put the grips on, but then will be sticky when it drys so it keeps them on, and its not a pain in the ass to make plyable if you want to repeat again.
when i shortened my poles the glue was pretty shitty so i just pulled the handles right off with a little muscle then after i cut them i just used a hot glue gun to put them back on, and that worked just fine. but after you put the glue on the poles or in the grips i would pop them on right away b/c it dries and cools down fast. also im sure something like crazy glue would work but i just went with a hot glue gun and didnt have any problems.
K2 4 Speed, 5 Speed and so on are not good poles to cut short. I did it once for a customer but wouldn't do it again. They have a screw that goes into the side of the shaft that holds the grip on and screws into a soilid piece that sits in the top half inch of the shaft. So if you cut any off the top you cut off that solid block then to screw the grip back on you have to drill and screw into the hollow shaft. When I did it I started splitting the shaft when I screwed into it, so I stopped, drilled a slightly bigger hole and used a fatter screw. Even then, the screw wasn't totally biting the hole. I told the guy the screw would probably rip out so come back for a fresh pair if they did but I never saw him again so who knows.
So short answer is it's not really worth the effort.
1. boil water on stove
2. stick handles in water, wait little bit and slide off
3. cut to desired length.
4. heat handles back up in water and slide back on poles no glue needed
