Mac...thing...cleans computer out..?

I remember hearing about something where if you leave your Mac on overnight or something, it will go through itself and get rid of unnecessary files and such and ultimately clean it out and help it to run faster and better? Is this true? How do you get it to do so? I feel like my MacBook could use a cleaning.

yeah they're maintenance scripts...usually your mac does em every night, every week and every month, but if it's shut down during the time it's suposed to run the script (i think its 3 am), it wont do them.
Get maintidget, its a widget available on apple's website...it gives you the opportunity to run the scripts manually.
