Science vs Religion Statement I Want to Make

Science has come a long was disproving religion, but I would like to say this.


Until science can come up with a half decent theory of how the world was created, I'm going to stick to religion. Don't give me some big bang theory garbage. That theory sounds like somebody was high and decided to write that the universe was created from a big bang of NOTHING, and then bam now all of a sudden we have planets.

...okay. I know some christians in my major (biology), and NO. All of my religious friends learn and understand evolution because its what they are tested on and whats required to go to med school. None of them truly believe a word of it, much in the same way I fully believe in its validity. Just because you are a biologist does not make you a believer in evolution, nor does it suppose that the two ideas are blending together in any way.

there was a discovery science channel special on the big bang, where a pretty well-known physicist said that he thinks God created the big bang, and the rules that govern our universe.

Well they would be mistaken, and the only way they could delude themselves into believing otherwise is by adopting the religious doctine of intelligent design (which there is no evidence to support or deny).

So most religious people are safe until we find evidence of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, then most are pretty much done for. Pat Robertson will be well discredited.

OK, I see your point. Not all of the 65% have combined the 2 ideas, but to say that none of them have is also wrong. My bio teacher that I had freshman year in high school believes in creationism and evolution.

Religion has never been proved...and never will. Thus...I will never believe in it. I think the concept of god is a load of bullshit. I can't believe over 95% of this planets population believes in it.

Almost all religions were created thousands of years ago...when man didn't know much frankly. So saying that some god (whether 1 in a monothestic religion or more in a polytheistic religion doesn't really matter) created everything was simpler and sounded "better" than saying "IDK". Thats my very long arguement condensed into a couple sentences; I dont have time right now.

And don't call me ignorant. I'm currently taking a comparative religion class.

Most religions talk about God creating man in his image, and the universe for their benefit. The Pat Robertsons include in their doctrine that man is alone in the universe. Did Jesus die for the sins of Aliens as well as us, or is there an alien Jesus?

Certainly after some contact is made, someone will attempt alter their doctrine to include our "alien siblings?" as well. I'm not sure at that point that many people will go for it...

So yes, I believe if intelligent life is found, most peoples' religions will be pretty much pwned.

There's no point in arguing about this.  No one will ever be right about this subject, at least not right now.  A person is only right in their own mind.  Some people just have a hard time accepting the fact that everyone has their own beliefs and opinions.  And that's understandable, everyone has their own feelings about stuff like this, some stronger than others.  I think that sometimes people argue not to prove the other person wrong, but to justify their own beliefs to feel some sort of self worth.  That's my 2 cents.

on the subject of alien life. it is completely plausable that there is intelligent life somewhere. the universe and even it's "parallel universes" are infinite. meaning an infinite of possibilities of the perfect conditions to create a world just like ours, and people that can think. there was an article not to long ago about a planet that could be inhabitable.

Religion is the opiate of the masses. It can manipulate you very easily if you believe deeply in a God of some sort.


However, religion does teach people how to live more peacefully. I will give it that. But for me, it didn't take a bible or belief in Jesus being divine to figure out how to be positive and trying to not hate.

I went to a catholic school until grade 11 so I know quite a bit about catholic/christian ideals, considering they were all shoved down my throat for 12 years.

ok my argument against religion is that one you've already been PROVEN wrong about evolution (please don't argue this god hasn't fucked around with carbon dating just for shits and giggles) and then there's the problem that there are tons of religious beliefs and it makes it really hard to say that only one is right

There is a simple reason why many of the people in the world believe in god. It goes back to the years before science was a major player in determining how the world and universe ticked. God, to some people, or religion itself helped explain why certain things happend, why did the sun rise? Why do the clouds spit thunder? Religion and God explained this and whether or not it was true didn't matter, it was better than having no explanation.

i think its safe to say on the topic of how the universe/world was created is, "i don't know". and thats the truth, we dont know. i don't care if your atheist or catholic we don't exactly know how the earth was created. i go to catholic school, and they even teach us that the creation story shouldnt be taken literally and that the big bang theory could be very possible and we can accept this, and still be catholic. they even tell us that evolution can be accepted.

we don't even fully know what goes on inside our own bodies sometimes. so knowing how life and the universe was created is way way waaaaaaay beyond our knowledge. its really a debate of religion vs atheism, and what happens to us when we die.

Exactly, i want to believe in creationism, because thats the way I've grown up and taught, but if creationisms  true, then Gods real, and if Gods real, then jesus is, and he died for the sins of earth. Buuuuuut, it's so plausible that there could be life on other planets (each speck of black in the sky contains sooo many galaxies) that something out there must be inhabited by something.  thats my two cents

I just wrote this.

I'm still living in the present, but I have a recollection of what I've done in the past.

I know the past exists, or how else could I have written this?

And as for cultures that don't have a past tense in their language, I highly doubt any of them have made it past the tribal stage.  Speaking a language without a past tense is like trying to make something but forgetting your most valuable tool.  You need an ability to relate to the past to move forward.

In short, the past tense is a tool we need to explain our existence and actions.

The past used to exist, but then it changed and now it doesn't anymore. We are always in the present. Past and future are just ideas that humans use to evaluate the potential consequences of their actions on the world around them.

Time and language may not be "true" but with that logic, nothing is true or even supported. Take even the most simple math for example, 1+1=2. Even if I said 1+1=4, the 4 could not in truth represent our symbol representing 'four' of something, but it would be a different description of our word 'two'. Culture and language is what gives names to our happenings and surroundings, even if they are 'delusional'.

actually, technically time travel is possible. a russian space ship was orbiting earth at a pretty high speed for like a couple months, and they recorded the time on earth, and the time on the space shuttle and the shuttle was like 1/10th of a second behind, so time slowed down for him and he is 1/10th of a second younger. its not much at all but its still pretty cool, i watched a show on tv about it, and actually every time you run, or walk or whatever, you could be slowing time down in an unmeasurable amount. though they said they didnt know if there is a specific speed you need to excede for it to actually slow time down.
and they said that if you were going the speed of light time would just stop, and you would probably have to excede the speed of light to go back in time.

Traveling back in time in such a manner give 2 outcomes, as I see it. One outcome would be that you would entire another dimension, and you would watch yourself do the same thing as before, setting yourself up for a total loop because as you continued with your life, you would repeat what you did and go back in time again.
Or you go back in time in the same dimension, and every little impact you have on the world around you, would impact the future you return to. If you saw yourself and told yourself to study hard and become a doctor, then if you could return to your original time, you would be expected to be a doctor.

It's a scary thought because it could potentially be true, and unless someone saw themselves and talked to them, we'd never know it. We could be stuck in an inevitable loop where regardless of what we try it will always have the same outcome.

Its all bullshit. Science proves the why, but not the how, Religion proves the how, but not the why. They are both very incomplete. The fact that 90% of all matter in the universe is dark matter means that our brains will never have the tools to process 90% of what's going on in the universe. Meanwhile, we're too busy killing over which God or lifestyle is the best. Until we stop being human, we will never know more than humans are capable off learning. Which is to say 10%.

jumping forward is easy... as said the faster you go the slower time moves (relative to you) if you aproach the speed of light and maintain this speed for say a year (relative to you) if you return to normal time much more than a year will have elapsed.

If you want hard numbers you'll have to look around -- but hopefully you understand the concept-- they discuss this in docos about intergalactic travel (how passengers on the spaceship would age little, but centuries will pass on earth)
