are you asking about becoming a DJ or a music producer? you can't dj with a synthesizer, and you can't produce music with turntables. it also depends on what kind of music you plan on getting into. do you already know much about certain typed of electronically produced music, or did you just hear about it? are you looking at more techno (house, trance, drum&bass) or more on the hiphop side?

here's three answers depending on your situation:

1. if you're looking to become a music producer (one who writes the tracks), you need to consider your budget. if you don't have much of one, you will probably have to do most of you producing through a computer. do you have a computer? if not, it should be your first purchase, and don't skimp. you will also need, at the very least, a midi keyboard that plugs into your computer. you can get synthesizer and sampler plug ins to run through your keyboard, and there are also many good sequencing programs available, but it all costs a good deal of money.

2. if you are looking at becoming a techno dj (one who spins records) you need a pair of turntables and a fairly decent mixer. don't go cheap on either, you will just be disappointed down the road. you will also need a source of good records. decide what kind of music you like the most, and stick with it.

3. if you are planning on becoming a hiphop dj (one that scratches) you need a pair of technics 1200s and a solid scratch mixer with a good crossfader. go with the 1200s no matter what because they are indestructible tanks that are tried and true.

with all of these options, you will also need a decent stereo setup and a nice pair of headphones. just remember that getting into djing/producing isn't cheap.

wow man THANKS A BILLION!!!! I was leaning more towards option 2, because i want to do something that involves more physical skill but that i could just chill to also. Yeah the money i know about..but i mean, it'd be something i'd have forever so yeah. I wasn't sure if i needed the mixer or not for the stereo..now this is what i hope..sorta just in my room a setup, like i don't want to blow tons on getting speakers for large performances...like..do they use amps? and what would i need total for a setup in my room including say...just 1 speaker. and a price about. thanks :)

u need:

-2 turntables. preferably technics 1200s. which are about $450 a piece. i know not cheap but their value is worth it in the long run. you can spin records on cheaper tables but just get technics. trust me.

-needles. get ortofons or stantons or shure. the long skinny ones are more expensive, the ones with the headshells work fine and are a bit cheaper

-mixer. you can spend as much or as little as you want, but just remember that the more you spin, typically the longer it will last. i wouldn't spend less than $300 on a mixer. you don't NEED too many extras on a mixer, just make sure it has 3 way equalizer (bass, mid, treble), and at least two outputs (booth, master)

-headphones. try some on. the new pioneers are real nice, and sony makes good ones too. you'll be spending at least $100 on headphones.

-amp. i just use a 2x100 watt receiver i got for $150 at soundtrack. you want this kind of power but you don't need a full on 5 channel receiver, and you also don't need a prostereo amp....those are more more loud playback at parties and concerts.

-speakers. DUDE YOU NEED !!!!!TWO!!!!! SPEAKERS!!!!! sure you can do it with just one, but considering most electronic music has quite elaborate separation of stereo channels, you need two speakers because music in mono is just lifeless, plus just one speaker isn't loud enough. i use two studio monitors with a 6 inch woofer and they put out surprisingly good bass. cost about $350 for the pair. go with bigger speakers if you want more bass, but you pay a lot more for the same mid/high range sound quality with bigger speakers.

records. either know a good record store close to where you live or find some internet sites. records are the most expensive part unfortunately. i have about 250 or 300 which totals about $3000. ouch. when you first buy records, buy a lot, get different records in the same genre to see what you like most.

this is ''all'' you need to get started. if you want to record, a tape player always works if you're short on budget, or a cd burner will work too, but a computer is the best.
