A little help. One of those threads.

Ok, been debating for a while, but it's time to retire the 190 V-Pros. I just moved back to Alaska, so now I won't be in NH anymore.
I'm 6'4" bout 195 or so and I ski all mountain, backcountry booters, park, you name it. I charge. I hardly ever ski slow, but sometimes I actually do. I've been riding stiff skis, so i might go that way, but I dunno, cause there's more snow out here and supposivly soft skis are good for that.

Here's a list I've thought up.
189 Seths
185 Scratch bc's or whatever the fuck they're called now.
186 Prophet 100s
188 Jp V J's
191 Ants
189 VCTs
187 MSPs
190 Gotamas

List was a LOT different when I was living in NH. So now I have to rethink everything. Looking for advice, experience riding any of the above, opinions, and of course hate mail.

SFBs might be too soft for you. vct's would be money, also check out the rossi scratch steeze. i think they have a 185 and the are really nice and plenty wide for AK. head mojo 105s might be good too, they are pretty burly

I'm leaning towards the Seths just cause of all the praise for them. The Ants interest me cause that guy just fucking slays it. I'm curious about the Jp V Js and the rossis. Thanks for the feedback so far.

SFB will probably be too short.

I wouldn't get anything under 105 at the waist, but that's me.

I would lean toward the Rossi Scratch Steeze or VCT.

just how soft are they? And examples or reasons as to why I should choose one over the other is greatly appreaciated. Thanks for the help again.

GO-TA-MAS. They were made for you. I promise. Unless you wanna try something soft. But if you are 195 and you actually charge then you will have no regrets on them.

I skied last year's Gots a few years back but it was in Vermont and I was hungover. They seemed a little slow edge to edge though, and they were the 182's not the 190s.

i think you should get prophet 100s in a 186. they suit your riding style perfectly. check my review of them. https://www.newschoolers.com/web/content/reviews/action/read/id/688/

you'll notice everyone else has rated them 10 so it ain't just me...

i've ridden seths, gotamas and brigades/bcs and i promise you this ski is in a whole different league. absolutely slays groomers, floats great in pow and is significantly better in the park due to its lightness. actually, brigades maybe better in the park.

get prophets or if you wanted something a touch wider, look into the steezes...

brigades (new bc) are definitely a lot of fun...i got the 185s, and i love them so far.  but for a guy your size, i feel like they wouldnt be quite enough of a ski for ak charging.  i use them as my all mountain ski here in nh with no complaints at all, so im going to say look for something a bit more specialized that will perform better in AK conditions.

ant definitely looks like a solid offering, and id look into the steeze (or its telemark counterpart, the raven, if youre not into the lisa frank-esque graphics).  from what ive heard, theyre rather stiff, i believe something around 115 underfoot, and youll have a twin to play with, unlike a lot of the other ak-friendly options, i.e. b squad, xwing lab, legend pro, etc.  but if youre not worried about having a twin, definitely look into one of those for a balls out, ak charging ski.  ive skied on my brother's xwing labs, the swallowtail one, and essentially, they ski like a race stock fat ski.  definitely worth checking out if youre interested in big lines and all that other fun stuff.

They aren't soft or stiff and they are pretty big.  the only thing to consider is your weight.  195 is big enought to consider a bigger ski.  I love the JJ and i am 175 and 6'

ANTs are the only ski mentioned in this whole thread close tp the stiffness of V-Pros (LPs too, but those won't work in park).

Sweet, thanks for all the feedback guys. Yes, I'm really interested in the Lines and the Ants as well as Seths. I do want a twin cause I've been working on landing switch off cliffs and such in cut up crud.

The skis don't have to be CRAZY stiff. But I do know that my V-Pros, no matter HOW fast I was going, ALWAYS held, and never felt noodle-ish or weak. However, they weren't the best for park, but that doesn't matter much, cause Alaska has no park that I know of.

yea, ANT's are definitely the closest to V-pros out of those, they'll be great for charging. Softer skis are fun to play around on, but if you like sending it most of the time, look at those or gotamas. both solid chargers.

VCT's are really good all mountain skis, a little wider and softer than the MSP, but they charge and slay jumps

i have vct's and i use them as my everyday skis
love them so much

soft tip and tail and stiffen up reall fast towards the middle of the skis

Ok, how do Ants, Seths, and Prophets all stack up? I think these will be my final three choices.

out of those 3 i would say the prophets would be your best choice for a one ski quiver in AK. i think the seths would be a little too soft for your style of skiing and i think the ants would be wee bit bigger mountain oriented.


...and so you know, birch hill has a ballin park in fairbanks.

eliminate seths. great skis but not what you're after. out of prophets and ants, get the prophets for their insane versatility unless you hardly ever hit jumps and groomers, in which case get ants.

I think it might be between the prophets and the Gotamas. I don't know how quick the Ants would be edge to edge. prophets would probably be the faster turners?

I think I'm going prophets. Anyone know anything about Decade? They're the only place i can find the 186s online other then Getboards and I don't trust them after all the shit I've heard.

Next question is bindings...

Just to fuck things up, I've been reading the reviews on the Hellbents. I know that they're a bit soft, but they sound mad fun. They'd be perfect for alaska pow days, and we really don't get that much ice here either.
Thoughts?

You've mentioned pretty much every type of pow ski in this thread now, make uo your mind what kind of ski you want first.

If you charge, go ANTs or EHPs.

how high a din are you gonna need? given the skis mentioned, i;m guessin you want more than a 12 din binding am i right? i ride mojo 15s on my pow skis and they kick ass. light, metal, pivot heel, good value. its the balls.

I know I have. Haha. Sorry, it's just that I buy new skis like every 5 years or so, or before that if they break. So I'm trying to weigh all my options cause $600 is a lot of bills to lay down, and I don't wanna fuck it up. I guess either way I go, I'll have a good ski, and I can always change how I ski and adapt to them.

thats a pretty hefty claim seeing as some of the biggest name pros in the big mtn game are riding dukes and all reports coming in saying they are burly as fuck.

just saying... you may wanna tone down the claiming. if you're seriously thinking about buying hellbents then you clearly aren't as much of a charger as your mum might tell you before bed.

The Dukes are in their first year, and yeah, they're supposed to be burly and shit, but with my past experiences, Marker bindings have sucked ass. Besides, pros can trash their fucking gear cause they get it for free or next to free in almost all cases. I have to pay for my shit, so I want it to last.

I am extremely hard on my gear. It's not that I treat it like shit, it's just that it gets the shit kicked out of it when I ski. I've also broken about two pairs of S916s or whatever they're called.

As far as the hellbents goes, I was thinking of switching up the way I ski a little. And seeing as I live in AK there is usually plenty of snow for them. They don't seem like they'd be too bad hauling ass.

I'm not claiming shit. Just telling you how I ski, and what happens to my gear when I ski. I've been pretty impressed with my V-Pros. They've been the longest lasting skis I've ever owned.

um, the Seths are a lot softer than the MSP's. I've skied the Seths a few times and I found they washed out quite a lot when really loading up the edge, I just had no confidence that they'd hold. I really think you should go with Gotamas. You obviously like the feel of Volkl's and they're a great ski that will kill it all mtn and on BC booters
