Quality Mountain Bike?

i need a bike for school that's good for going up hills and long distance. i found this one made by jeep...is it quality?

not even close.  if you're riding just to class get a commuter bike.  kona smoke, dew etc.  trek portland,  swobo otis etc.  if you want to get a good mountain bike, look around but if you're staying on the road mountain bikes suck for getting around.

no, that is a horrible bike.

look into electra townie they are way comfortable to ride and can look pretty cool if you get the right one

Road bikes are nice for commuting as long as you ride gently.  I like to jump off shit and hit whatever I see along the way, so they don't work for me.  But if you're using it to get places and nothing else they're great.

i don't see me jumping off too much more than curbs and small sets, but all just to cut the ride shorter-nothing too extreme.

might want to check out some single speed, fully rigid mountain bikes.  super simple, some have 29" wheels, the redline monocog is around $500

get a cannondale....but if you want to spend less than 500 get a specilized hardrock..its a front suspension mountain bike that is a good starter bike

road bikes tend to be seriously expensive, and more use specific for road. My recomendation would eb a kona smoke, dew or humuhumanukanukaua'pua deluxe(sp?) and have the satisfaction of owning a bike withe the longest bike name ever.

just get a old road bike from a garage sale, tune it up a bit, get a comfortable seat and you are all set. that will be plenty for just A-B transportation.

he said hes going fairly long distances, and up a lot of hills (which im assuming he will later be going back down)

maybe if he was riding strictly street and dj, singlespeed would be good.

a decent road bike is going to be pretty expensive, and definitely not suitable for going of curbs and small sets.

you can definitely get set up with a decent bike for what your looking to do for around $500, probably something xc or maybe hybrid oriented. definitely check out your local bike shop, tell them what your looking for and what kind of riding you'll be doing. they will probably know a little more than i (or at least lets hope so)

ive heard road bikes are mad tough cuz of all the abuse they have to take. you would think it but stuff like cobble stones and things puts exterme wear and tear on the bike. idk just something ive heard.

Road bike wheels taco and flat spot like there's no tomorrow.  Mountain bike wheels are wider and thicker for a reason.

I can hook you up with a Specialized p2 hardtail with 07 components. I made it single speed but is good for anything. Need to sell it to buy a new dh bike frame

Since he's looking for a commuter, I don't think a bike like that is necessary at all...or even the least bit practical.  I have a $5,000 DH bike, but I sure as hell don't use it to go anywhere.

^ I ride my Scott Nitrous 10 as my commuter.  anyway, you should by used.  check craigslist.  you can get a decent trek, specialized, giant, kona, etc for $100-$300
