glen plake is touring the US right now. He stopped here in iowa at my home "hill" Sundown. He only tells the place where he is going that he is comming about a day before so he doesnt get all the hype. I spent the day with a group of about 20 skiiers and him and his wife. Probably the best day skiing at my slope. He had us doing all these old school tricks; daffys mule kicks etc. 4 wide off the jump. The best things were his stories and after the day he signed posters and shirts and gave away a lot of free stuff he then headed up to afton alps. anyone get to ski with him? you tube him the guy is crazy on water 2!
I might be mistaken but my mom used to be like a pro waterskier and I think she water skied with him.
but thats awesome dude. I love old school stuff. My hill had 0 park this week because of the thaw so we did all this wierd stuff this weekend and talked about glen plake doing old stuff. yeah I tell cool stories
yea he came to my hill on december 30th...i live in the upper peninsula of michigan...i am a ski instructor and had just got back in from giving a lesson and he walked by in a cowboy hat, a fleece jacket, some pjs and some long skis...i didnt recognize him at first but one of my friends was like wow that looked like glen plake...he went to the bathroom, came out, walked by again, stopped turned around and he was just like, "whats up guys? im glen." and we were all like woah! haha cause we were just talking about him...
so i got to ski with him and his wife kim and about 15 other skiers and we were doing the exact same things...ballet tricks and crazy shit like that....it was pretty sweet...
he sounds like a cool guy to ski with.
I heard he was at Killington on a day I was there and I swear I saw a guy that looked like him but I'm probably just full of it. either way it'd be cool to meet the man.
funny story... i too was skiing at sundown when plake visited, yet i was completely oblivious to his identity. i rode up the lift with him and we chatted a bit, he was super chill and is one hell of a skier! but at the same time i felt pretty retarded when i found out it was him and i had no idea!
its funny, i was just watching bilzzard of aahhs and license to thrill last night talking about how much he rips. i've met him too, at a waterski tournament in wisco.
one of the funniest things ive ever seen occured when he came to waterville ~4-5 years ago.
he was teaching all these gapers this hip-spin trick: halfway through a turn you go down on your uphill hip, do a flat 270 on the ground and ski away down hill.
for anyone that know WV, he taught all these beaters the trick on that tiny flat section above true grit, and then proceeded to have them practice on true grit (the steepest trail there, ~30-35 degrees at the top?). i didn't realize it until now but i am 100%b sure he chose that trail on purpose. i'm on teh chair and i see plake do the hipspin at the top of the trail and rip down it. then like 20-30 beaters all proceed to try ti at the same and all of a sudden there are 20-30 beaters doing the slide for life down a steep icy east coast trail all at once. the carnage was legendary. i love glen plake.
I met him at Ski Barn the day I was purchasing my Salomon Force 9 rear entry ski boots... the same boots he gave his seal of approval on in some ads. Rear Entry was huge at this time. While I was trying them on he walked in... his mohawk was down.. but I knew it was him. I was in shock, what the hell is he doing in Northern NJ.
I must have been staring at him...The sales guy tried testing me.."do you know who that is?" I said "hell, yea... thats Glen Plake... hes a fuckin' legend"
I went to go pay for my boots and he was so chill... "sup bro.. where do you ski?" and talked about everything skiing... before I left he signed a poster and gave it to me... still have to this day.... NO FEAR! He has such a warm personality... you think you known him forever.
Wish I could ski with him.
Met him @ killington last season while watching the Next Snow Search finals. was standin there w/ my buddy drinkin a beer, and look over and see this dude w/ neon hair hanging out of his hat. I said "dude, that's Glen Plake" my buddy was like naww, no way. But then he kind of moseyed on by us and I said hey. We chatted just for a few minutes, but super chill guy. It was cool just to meet him and shake his hand. Very down to earth.
Glen Plake is so rad. I remember seeing this poster of him arc-ing this gnarly turn with his feet crossed ninja style and draggin the crossed tip.
does he really ride for Elan though?
i thought if u cut him open a bunch of Ks and 2s would spill everywhere.
dude that was definitely the day I think I saw him at Killington. that was the same dude there was this dude from boston on the gondola and he was like bastads.
i was riding up with you...he was commenting on your skis telling you about the company and askin if you liked them. Such a sweet day! i got to ride all day witha a pro at a hill thats 10 minsa away from my house! ill have to get some pics of us doin some old school stuff up here.
