Wireless help

The only way of figuring it out is to either get a program that will effectively hack into you wireless and find the password, or you have to log into your router and check the password on your wireless. If you know your username/password for your router that would be by far the easiest way.

If you don't know it, then you're kinda screwed. The only other option I can think of would be to completely reset your router to default, login with the default settings and set everything back up how you had it and don't forget the username/password or security for your wireless again.

yeah i don't know the password. and i had the damn thing written down i just can't remember where i put it haha. it's not a big deal since i can login, but it does kinda suck when others who come here can't. i might have to reset it like you said sometime...

anyone else positive this is my only option?

are you using windows or mac computers? if its a windows machine you should be able to make a wireless network setup disc that you can then use to set up the network on other windows computers. under the wireless network properties you mey also be able to click a checkbox that shows the wireless key. if you have a mac, sorry I don't know anything about networking them

just google password recovery tools or something, you might have some luck. I've used password recovery stuff to get lost passwords before, it can take a while to find one that works properly though

That wouldn't help his problem. He doesn't know the WEP (or WPA) Security Key for the wireless network. All that a network setup disk like that does is enable the wireless networking on a computer and set its workgroup to be the same as the parent/host computer so that they can be recognized between each other and have file and printer sharing. Unfortunately this disk would have nothing to do with the SSID or the WEP Security key.

The network startup disk function in Windows won't, I'm almost 100% positive on that. It merely makes network sharing over TCP/IP possible and configures the computers for them. It might put in the SSID, but it won't give him the WEP key he needs.

If you don't want to reset your entire network, your best bet is to look online on how to crack a WEP Security key, I've never tried it personally though.

Chances are it is WEP you are using, and not WPA. WPA isn't used that often. There are 2 kinds of WEP encryption you can choose for your wireless signal. The password will be either 13 or 26 digits long. Hopefully its only 13, cause I'd assume the 26 is much harder to crack into if you decide to take this route.

its not a network startup disk as such, its for wireless networking. you save the settings to a usb drive and then you put that into the next computer and it copies the settings. I've used it before when I was staying with people who had forgotten their wpa key.

If you have your settings on a USB flash drive, follow these steps:

Log on to the computer.

Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on the computer.

You might be prompted to restart the computer.

Click to open Add a Wireless Device.

Follow the steps in the wizard to save your wireless network settings to the USB flash drive."

So yea its not the actual network startup disk, sorry for any confusion about that, but it is possible to do it.

well it was REALLY easy to do after i just thought about some things...all i had to do was

Applications->Utilities->Keychain Access

Find your wireless network name on the list, double click, select show password, enter your user password.
