Wax

Dang! Never? Get a hot wax and you'll see the difference. I wax at my house and I do it every 20-30 runs, almost every time I go. You'll get base burn if you don't. Wax not only protects the base, it allows you to go fast, get up to speed quick and not get hung in edge transfers. It makes all the difference. yeah i wax my skis every time I go out.  If you can't do it this often, make sure you're getting a coat of wax on them at least after every 3 days you go out.  if you don't have the stuff to do it yourself, make some friends with some people who work in a shop (or someone who has all the stuff to wax skis) and most people will get them done for you for some beers.

Yep, I tune crap for my friends and fam, even snowboards. You have the right idea taking them in, they won't sand them but ask them to do a base grind and structure. The base of a ski is the same principal as a golf ball with the divots, you need a micro-structure so the snow can travel from front to back. If the base is slick with no micro-grooves, it will suction to the snow, kind of like how it feels on a spring slush day. The base structure needs to be done at the shop unless you have some mad tools and are a total tuning gangsta!

But do have someone teach you, it's very rewarding to tune your own gear. Sharpening edges is important too as well as checking your bindings. You trust your life with the stuff, you should be intimate with it. And, if you do it yourself, you have the luxury of keeping different temp wax on hand so you can check conditions the night before and wax accordingly. The first day out this year I still had yellow (warm) wax on from my last spring day and they sucked, fortunately my Karmas had purple (cold) wax and I just went back to the truck and switched rides.

Read it, there are things you need to know about iron temp, etc... because putting a hot iron on your skis can totally F them up if you do it wrong. It's not hard tho, really, just print the instruction pages and you're golden.

just buy some hot wax at your local shop. i get green, it's basically all purpose so i don't have to switch out a lot...i just use an old iron i found at my house and it gets the job done. melt the wax onto your ski, then scrape it off. pretty easy to do really....

I do mine once a week or so, but would do it more frequently if I could afford to keep buying waxc. a guy at the hill i used to ski at who is sponsored by K2 (only gets free skis once a year) never waxes his.

Close, but get a little more education. If you're iron is hot enough to make the wax smoke, it's too hot for your bases and it messes up the composition of the wax. It is easy but read up on it, education is key.

i went 2 years without waxing at all but now i do them whenever its not busy in the shop it makes a world of difference

thats a little often. ur gonna spend mad $$$ on wax if u keep doin that. like once every 1-2 weeks is fine. if ur dont do rails and stuff like that u would even be fine with once or twice a year

how good is the rub on paste shit. I have this burton stuff that seems to work really well for me.
