Video format questions????

So I made some ski videos this past weekend and I am trying to load them onto itunes so I can put them on my phone. However when I convert them into MP4 the quality is reduced by about half. Is there a good program to use to convert them that will not reduce the quality, or is that just how MP4 is.
Also when using a Mac to edit videos what format do they need to be in? MP4, quicktime?

#1, What type of camera are you using? Hard disk, mini dv, ect?
#2 What software are you using?
If you are using iMovie, when you export the movie chose Share> ipod and that should make it into itunes format.
If you are using Final cut pro, there are tons of different formats to export in. I don't have any raw footage on my comp right now to try to do a sample export. If you are using final cut, and can't figure it out, I would export to a DV tape and then load it into imovie. From there, go Share > iPod.

download iSquint. It's for Ipods but it might work with your phone. It uses H.264 encoding and it works really well.
