So Im in need of a new tv. I have 2 choices really.
1.) Sony rear projection lcd tv (42/46 inch, not sure). This is on clearance from 1300 to 1000.
2.) Sharp 32 inch lcd for 750, marked down from 1050.
I would be doing a lot of gaming on this and watching some hd shit. i also will need to transport the thing in a year when I move out, but I shoudlnt be moving that far... (drivable distance). I was leaning towards the sony as its larger.
Comments, advice? I don't know much about rear projection.

personally I think rear projection blows. go with the other one. sure its a smaller but itll give you a better picture and it costs less

Ok, but why do you think rear projection blows?

From my research of tv's, lcd's are the most reliable and have the best overall picture. Rear projection can recreate some colors better but also lack in others. They're also bulkier. I narrowed my choices down to lcd and plasma and the best price/size were 36-42". You also don't need a huge name brand like LG or Sony. You can save quite a bit by buying a smaller name.

if you plan on gaming with it make sure it has DLP so the images dont get permanented on the screen. dont really know the deal with this but my dad says thats why some people buy smaller shittier tvs for gaming

The sony uses '3lcd technology', not DLP apparently. What this means, is pretty much beyond me.

i have no idea what it means either. i would just ask the guy at best buy or wherever you're purchasing from.

only happens with plasma if a stationary image is left on for a long ass time. wont happen with LCD

the only big con i know about rear projection is that the lamp gives out after 5000-8000 hours... costing 200-300 bucks for a new one.

haha if you get a rear projection you are out of your mind. Honestly if you want to save some money, buy the new VIZIO. It's around $500 and the #1 selling tv for 2007. My friend has it and xbox and every game looks sick. Either the vizio or the new Panasonic LCD's. DO NOT BUY PLASMA

Burn in is NOT a problem on TV's anymore. Most if not all tvs have pixel shifting so the image moves slightly and gets rid of the possibility of burn in.
Rear projection: cheapest for the size. My friend has a 60 inch Sony that looks pretty awesome. Its bulky but its light and pretty easy to move around.
LCD: Thin, look sharp, better prices than plasma.
Plasma: Fragile, expensive, not sure whats great about them. Viewing angle?
I have a DLP projector that just projects on my wall. It's seriously fucking awesome. It was 600 dollars and its projecting a 7 foot image on the wall in HD. It looks so sick with games and hi def stuff. The only problem is that if its too bright out its hard to see because we have a huge glass doorwall in our apartment.
My advice. Go big or go home. Anything smaller than 40 inches is super disappointing to me now.

Rear projections just look shitty. Even in a high end one the picture looks good in the center but horrible on the edges. Go with an LCD and make sure you get one that supports 1080p, it's not really Hi def if it doesn't.

It's 720p. shouldnt that be fine on a 32" screen?

Get an JVC LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) tv. Its like a hybrid of lcd technology and dlp technology. the picture is amazing and since its rear projection, they are big. they make tvs that are 1080p.

That's true in most cases...but not for plasma. Burn is still an issue. If you fall asleep with you xbox side panel up or something, when you wake up it will be etched into the screen. Not permanently, no, but it will still be there. Alot of people have troubles with HUD (heads up displays) on games and plasma screens. Some people that play a single game for hours on end will find that the images get burned into their screen and are a pain in the ass to get rid of. Sometimes it takes up to 24 hours of leaving your Plasma on regular cable for the image to get wiped away. It's not a permanent problem unless you leave a stationary image up there for like days on end, but it can still be troublesome with Plasma.
