Capturing video and your heads

so i just started filming a little yesterday with my new camera (its a vx2100)
and i remeber reading somewhere that on higher end cameras capturing on them really wears down your heads and screws them up. and its better to just capture using a shitty camcorder or something.

so i can do that but im wondering if its true? and also my other camcorder is really old and just basicly a piece of shit will the quality be reduced in anyway? cause i know the tape will still have the same picture...but it will go thru the shitty workings off my other camera before it goes on my computer

yeah it does get your heads dirty, and you need to clean them every now and then. and after a long time you will probably need to replace them.  though i really think people make it a bigger deal than it is.  like it will be a loooooong time before your heads get shitty enough to need replacing.   and im pretty sure the price you would pay for a pos walmart cam, is about the same as getting the heads replaced.

im mainly wondering if theres gonna be any difference in quality
but thanks for letting me know its not that big a deal from what i read before it made it seem like it really was.

I used to have a vx2000 and i used a little handy cam to capture.  If your other camera is a sony handycam then capture on that.

i have like a panasonic gs320 or something like that. but it shouldnt be that big a difference. so are you saying that there isnt gonna be a difference in quality on what i capture on then?

There will be a big difference in the quality and clarity of the individual pixels, as well as the manual features such as shutter speed and aperture controls which you will need in the varying light. use the vx2100 if you want anyone to watch your movies

Ok I dont really understand your response but im pretty sure you misunderstood his question. He doesn't want to know which camera he should use to film, thats a no brainer. He wants to know if the quality will be reduced using his lower quality camera to capture the footy that he filmed with the vx2100.

there won't be a difference.
im thinking that maybe if the heads are reaaallly bad on your capture cam then there might be a slight loss of quality. but you should be alright. it's definitely safer than using your new vx for capturing. thats just not good.

capturing will not effect the quality of the footage at all if you are capturing with a different camera, i wouldn't worry about you heads wearing down to much. most people that use capture cams are people who film with vx1000s because that is a  much older camera. fixing it can be very expensive and it has probably already had 5+ years of filming on it. if you realy want to keep your camera perfect you could use a capture cam but it will take soooooo long for your heads to wear down its not a big deal. Plus the panasonic gs320 isnt to bad of a camera either i know its a good low budget starting up camera, you could probably sell it on here to some kid.

actually i know because ive tested it, that if you shoot on a vx2100 and capture on a crappy cam that is not a sony sometimes there will be a quality reduction.. i use a gl2 and i used to capture with a crappy sony cam and it was wayy easyer and smoother when i captured on a canon cam. so if you shoot canon capture canon...sony capture sony..etc but with a vx2100 i wouldnt use a capture cam because as said earlyer  its not really old and it wont kill your tape heads.

Ok I shoot with a VX2000, and I use my old Canon Optura 10 to capture. Now I did try capturing with my VX (not to test, just cause I was too lazy to spin my chair around and grab my Optura) and I do notice that it is very slightly more crisp when captured with my VX. But it's like a really insignificant difference like you really need to examine it to see it. Given the time you save on your heads using a capture cam, I'd say its still worth it. So moral of the story...If your like me and can't piss money out of your ass...use a capture cam!

It is perfectly fine to shoot on your VX and capture with a little mini cam. It's all digital and it's the same information making it to the computer.  I shoot on my DVX and capture on my canon zr90 and have had no problems with it.
