Shoulder surgery

so i just had arthoscopic sugery in my right shoulder to fix a labral tear, and to tighten the ligaments in  my right shoulder.  so now i'm in a sling for 6 weeks and no skiing for 4-6 months.  has any one else had a shoulder surgery?  how did the recovery go.  i'm on the day after the surgery, and it sucks, my shoulder hurts so much right now, and i'm so bumed my ski season is done until at least may/june or next november

Shit man thats a real bummer..I haven't had shoulder surgery but i guess heaps of physio would be the key and take it easy with it.
Who knows, you might find some $$ and can head to NZ for some snow in July

A year ago i had the exact same thing done, and lost all my ski season. I was in this huge ass purple padded sling for 3 months. The most importand thing is to do the therapy, it may suck BUT DO IT! If you dont do the therapy you will loose some of the motion of your arm and then next time you fall on it you will just tare it all over again. I had therapy prob till 6 months after i had the actually surgury. I got the it done last early january and now its 100% I've probyl fallen on it like 20 times already and its holding together fine.

I dislocated my shoulder Monday, and am already rehabing it to hopefully avoid needing any surgery.

PT is KEY.

i think the injury that started it was a shoulder dislocation when i was 2, then the injury vanished until eighth grade and i started having chronic dislocations of my shoulder.  it started getting worse and worse, so i saw the doctor, had an mri, and learned i had a labral tear, ligament and tendon stretching, tears in my cartilage, and even some bone that had chipped away from the many dislocations. 

doctor said to fix it now or have a complete shoulder replacement when i was 30.  so i had it done now.  got 8 ski trips in, in addition to backyard sessioning, so its not a complete season blown.  worst thing is lost half my season 2 years ago due to a broken wrist.

i have my follow up this thursday, but he said 4-6 months before i can do skiing and other sports.  anybody from the EC know how much snow there is on closed mountains in may or june?  i'll definitely hike if there is some left

i had the same thing done last year. except it wasn't arthoscopic so the recovery was longer.  i waited till the summer though and used a brace last year. but the brace did squat. sry to hear about ur season bro

i had a right bankart reconstructive about 5 years ago.  it took about six months to get back to 100%  that shit hurt so bad for so long, but the pain slowly vanished until it was no more.  Some advice-
find a good physical therapist (this is key) and do your damn exercises.  start working out as soon as you can, and you'll be back next season stronger than ever.  good luck bro
oh, and chron makes vicodin work better

yea i had the same operation done in septmeber
it was shitty for the first while
but it gets better as your range of motion gets back
im lucky to even be skiing right now but im taking
it slow so the shoulder can heal right

make sure you dont sleep on it wrong either

that sucks. i have dislocated my shoulders as in both time and time again. my pt didnt do much. im just careful and use a shoulder brace for the one thats not doing so well at the time, i am hoping to avoid surgery

I did a similar thing back in april, tore the ligaments in my left shoulder. I had to have a plate in for 3 months and then 3 months recovery after that was taken out. I completely agree with the guy above when he says do the physio, it has helped me greatly and whilst i still do not have quite the same movement all is good. I was back in the park 2 weeks ago eating some landings and rails like never before and all is holding up. Gd luck with the recovery.

yesterday i got my labrum reattached and my bankhart cartelidge repaired. sucks shit, but percs got me floatin real nice.

I had a super chronic dislocation problem. Probably 400+ dislocations in 4 years. Had a bankart open surgery repair (not orthoscopic). I did physio pretty hard and just went back to a fairly normal lifestyle after like 2 months, while doing the physio. I hit rope swings, did cliff jumping, skimboarding, trampolines, and had no problems. I skied hard on it this year, bailed on it a bunch and it has stayed in for almost a year now. I just tore my knee apart though, which is completely unrelated, so Im back on the couch. My advice: physio that shit, buy an ultrasound (www.sonicrelief.com), and don't try anything new, just do stock tricks with stock sports for about 6months.

I had a shoulder reconstruction a couple years back, just to tighten the ligaments and shit...just take your time or it won't heal, make sure you are careful for that first month, and nothing two much for the full six months, take it easy...it sucks for it not to work.

I had the same surgery on my left shoulder in October. He had to do a lot of work in there I think he said he used 8 anchors. I'm in physio still and I'm getting my strength and mobility back gradually and I should be back to full capabilities by the end of April I hope.

I missed the whole season except for one day in sunshine because I couldnt resist but I had to take it easy. It sucks but it should be worth it.

i just hurt my shoulder too. was going to have surgery but not anymore its healing faster better stronger than expected sorry you had to have surgery bummer man. i feel for you

man.... you guys have me bummin with all of these stories. I also have a problem with my CDS (chronic dislocating shoulder).. sounds like a disorder. and it is just that. I wake skate durrying the summer and thats were it all started. I have wokin up some nights to dislocated shoulders. Can tell you nothing worse than that shiat. I have an appointment to have it checked out soon and im sure i will need surgery. So the success rate on the surgery sounds pretty good is this correct? any wakeboarders out there or wakeskaters who are really yanking on that shoulder?

I pretty much landed on my shoulder in the halfpipe doing a 3. Clipped a boot and hit the flats. I broke the top part off my humerus, and had to get it put back together with 2 screws. I also fucked my rotator cuff and they screwed up some muscles doing the surgery so I half to do physical therapy. I've been out for 5 weeks in a sling and I go back Tuesday to hopefully get it off. I stopped taking painkillers after the first week so it wasnt that bad, just missed a whole lot of the season.

i have had 4 dislocation and a labrum tear this year and i am still skiing.  After the season I will get surgury hopefully

Question for some of you...

Shoulder braces... do they work well?

I had my shoulder sublux again slightly last week on a litle switch up where my arm was outstretched. I didn't even fall.

Overall, my shoulder is strong and has just subluxed 2 times this season, and I want to continue with sports and skiing without the worry.

Does a simple brace like the EVS shoulder brace work well and do they still allow decent range of motion?

i spent 310 on the sully shoudler stabilizer and it seems to work ok.  Skiing is fine but i makes some graps hard.  This brace has much more to it then the one your are lookign at though.

Yea me too, bankart, thats the same thing you got, cartilagus repairing. I had arthroscopy and shoulder inmovilization for a month and then a really good rehab and was skiing carefully on the 2nd month. The kinesiotherapy is fundamental for reaching rapidly the 100%.

Follow what your doc says and you will feel like nothing ever happened.

The worst thing is going to take a shit and having to clean your ass with your left hand, but otherwise you get to develope left hand motricity really good.

Howdy, sorry to hear about the shoulder.  I am rehabing a dislocation myself from January this year.  I am 28 and was told that with my age my muscles will stiffen (which is a bad thing) but that will help to hold my shoulder in if there strong enough to do the job.  I haven't had arthoscopic surgery and was advised against it until and if I re-dislocate it.  From what I've heard the most important thing is to be religious about doing the PT, and that eventually your arm will be as good as new.  I am not sure if I helped at all but lots of strength and luck for a speedy recovery.  Stowe didn't do it last year, but the years before they've held a Last Trick Rail jam on Memorial Day weekend where they push the piles from the half pipe into two rail lanes.  Its a long shot for you but I thought I'd mention it.
