I rode without polls today because I was working with my 3 year old son. After his mother picked him up and brought him to the lodge to warm up I decided to take a few steeps by myself and without polls. At first it's kinda like that bad dream where you show up to school without pants. But after one run I decided that pants were way over-rated. I even went out of my way to make fun of it while standing in line without polls just to save face. Once I got off the lift I headed straight to the steepest area I could ski without a hike. I loved it. I was able to drag an open hand during pow turns, naturally grab off low jibs and in the trees without smacking my polls, never worried about them getting in the way if I bailed hard. Felt like I spun better to(this being all mental). 
Freedom.
The only thing that is scary are tree wells. I dumped it once in pretty deep stuff and had trouble getting up. Wanted to take one ski off to try and get up but couldn't reach it. If my head would have been buried I would have paniced. This and looking like I'm trying to fit in and be accepted by the younger park crowd are my only concerns. 

Almost 30, and pretty sure this is going to be taking off with everyone but racers and bump skiers.

no poles in trees in the funnest thing ever. Poles really only get in the way when you're skiing in trees but without poles you can swing off of trees and stuff. I'm a huge fan

Im done hating on it. Only took 3 runs without then grabbed them again, but next time Im leaving them in the truck. Besides, skiers with mustaches didn't say anything and they know everything.

i did it all last year and im back to using them this year.It was fun for   a little but i feel way more in control with them then without. I really liked getting all my fingers on my skis for grabs though.

I ski without poles all the time, I too learned to ski with out them when I was teaching my kids to ski uhhh  11 years ago?  I now ski without poles when I am filming, no issues, no problems, only wierd looks form people in the lift lines. There is a certain freedom to skiing without them. Very few people can make skiing look good without poles. Only skilled skiers to begin with look natural without poles.  I am probably not one of them.   BTW - the compromise is little itty bitty poles in the park...  useless, but they keep the haters away.

yeah i was filming the other day and i didnt have poles. The camera died so i just decided to hit the last jump. With out poles i tweaked the grab so hard i popped my ski off mid rotation. I still like my poles though.

poles def have there place, I think skiing without them makes you think about where your arms are more helping people keep their arms in and look less like a cat getting thrown out a window when doing a trick.

actually, its a popular quote many people know it by heart.  it used to be in someones sig.  as for no poles.  I really like no poles and poles.  Ill have to try skiing without poles in the trees and in somewhere steep, but i really prefer no poles when skiing switch and in the park.

my pole broke so i skied no poles for a few runs, it sucked trying to ski the remaining pow next tot the trees but it was okay other than that, but i think ill stick with the poles.........

I tried one day with no poles at keystone cuz id lost mine the day before at breck, im not a fan just because i felt soo awkward not having poles. Not about to hate on anyone not using them, u should be able to do what u want without being judged, i just dont like the way it looks or feels myself.

i would respect this thread more if you learned how to spell poles correctly. not "polls". but anyway, i feel that if your gonna ski with super tiny poles, just go no poles. I am a fan of using poles, although, i dont really care what others do.  I still ride 45" in poles in the park, none of that 30inch shit. It all comes down to preference. I use my poles and feel uncomfortable without them.  As a pipe skier too, they are absolutely necessary

I think it's funny that the only argument people who are supporting poles in the park is that if you don't use poles you're gay.

Do you honestly believe that if you ski without poles that you're a homosexual?

Oh ya I guess I also hear people say that it's harder to balance without their poles.  If this is your situation you need to learn how to ski properly because poles are supposed to have nothing to do with your balance.

Poles are for timing your turns, nothing else.  I suppose that could be argued because there are some situations when skiing mountain where you would use your pole prod a cornice or stuff like that but I can't say that really counts and it isn't why poles are used.

^^I guess for me it's a mental thing, because whenever i slide rails without poles its a little weird for me because the balance is a bit off. But for regular skiing i completely agree, if you don't know how to ski properly without poles, you are not skiing properly with them.

remember the part when he said they're for timing turns... it doesn't affect your balance very much but it is a lot harder to stay in rhythm.

poles or no poles, do what you want.

skiing is about having fun, and if you have fun with no poles, go for it. stop calling people gay if they dont use poles. theyre enjoying themselves while skiing, and if you care that much that you call people gay for not using poles, your probably worrying about whats cool too much to have a fun time.

yeah i tried it on the weekend riding pipe cleaners teaching my girlfriend s how to ski. it was akward at first with out poles, but i can see why some people like it. in the trees is a little scary feeling, but i can see the hype.

ya i tried skiing no poles on some steep powder it was fun sragging my hand doing resal grabs off of wind drifts but one problem that was embarsing and hard was the lift line

I said polls! LOL Thats the rural area central Wyoming high school education coming out. Poles, my bad. Im just going to ski with an umbrella from now on. Maybe I can get Eric P. to do it then we can focus on that for the 08/09 season. Why did I create this thread?

Same exact thing happened to me this week.  I fucked up my hand this week on the first day of break and couldn't hold poles for a few days without it killing my hand.  So i skiied without them (mainly through the park but a little bit of regular runs down steeps and through the woods) and it was  a lot of fun.  It was really good skiing pole-less through the park.  I wouldn't mind doing it again some other time.

its fun i guess to mix it up sometimes, i often ditch my poles when putting on a course and its great to get some big lean turns in on the groomers, have never tried it through powder tho, i like my pole plants when hitting the steeps and the deep stufff..


id say over all..stick with poles, but there is nothing wrong with leaving them at the bottom for a few runs.

however no poles will never become and overall new trend or way to ski, just a few park rats out there who will be doing it,

we will never see the guys in warren miller taking the heli up in alaska with out poles, unless they fall off...
