i have to write a paper on this by monday and i really dont know where I stand on the subject. most of the people on this site have some pretty good thouhgts so i figured id give it a shot. the basic idea is that is it possible to remove all or most poverty in a country, if so why? if not why?

economically, without poverty we would have inflation. We need an unemployment, so the cost of living can be low and stable.

allow me to clarify, although you make a solid point petek the question isnt concerning the repercusions of erasing poverty, but rather is it even possible to remove most or all poverty.

Poverty can't be stamped out. Not as long as people are as lazy as they are now.

but what about people paying more taxes to give people welfare. like they do in sweden. theres hardly any poverty in sweden because theve got public medical care and lots of welfare and people do just fine. im also referring to the US in my question by the way, sorry.

sweden is very close to capital socialism, whereas US is more of a conservative capitalism. ITs not possible because the government that would put much care on welfare will not be elected. Its a basic list of priorities. I'm a center, and i believe that the whole welfare system should be completely reformed, because in the long run, it hurts more then it helps. But you want a definate answer, i was beatin around the bush(no pun intended) the whole time. No, poverty cannot be abolished, same with racial cleansing, you will always miss some1, or something, especially on a society based on idividualism.

if the world split its money equally amongst every person, i think we'd still be in poverty but less people would be starving...BUT our way of living would drop a lot..i say impossible to erase it, people are too greedy

poverty is a reletive term, if we were to solve what we call poverty and create a higher standard of living then we would eventully see that new standard as unfit for human habitation and that in turn would be called poverty,

word to that man, great point/\. yeah i kinda figured id get a response like this. It cant be abolished no matter what we do. and to whoever said that welfare hurts more than it helps is so right. welfare is supposed to get people back on their feet and get going again but all it does is make people lazy. if you work a minumum wage job in america it only adds up to about 18k a year not including taxes which means like 12k takehome. a yearly welfare cut isnt much different than that, so lazy fucks sit around and cash in on our hardworking americans tax money for doing absolutely nothing, what the fuck? whats everybodys view on welfare, for it or against it?

I once stayed 1 month in Tanzania, and kenya. My parents were once welfare collectors, who were unemployed. I can say from experience, that i know what poverty is, poverty isnt collecting welfare, its people dying on the streets, who have no use of there legs ravaged by disease, starving, run by dictators, either couped or 'elected' that have 90% of the wealth. Poverty in the US and Canada is nothing compared to africa. If we could just raise there standards to our poverty standards...relatively there would be no pverty there anymore.

petek i understand what your saying and i wish there was something I could do for those people because they are in far worse condition then the average poor person in American. and thats cool your parents were ONCE welfare collectors, shows some determination and pride and they actually made use and not abuse of something givin to them for free. did you guys know that if you have just the clothes on your back and a refrigerator, nothing else, you are better off than %80 percent of the entire worlds population. which would put you in the top 20 percent, just to give you an idea of how good you have just to be typing away in this thread.

'if the world split its money equally amongst every person, i think we'd still be in poverty'
Funny you mention this. There was actually a study out concerning the same thing.
They proposed, If a government took all the the money (from the rich and from the poor), and evenly divided it among the people - each having a fair share, within in a few years they would end up right back where they started.
Approximately the same small percentage would be wealthy, and the rest would return to poverty.
Why? Poverty (for the most part) is a mindset. The rich got their wealth for a reason. A small few gained wealth out of chance or from their parents, but chances are if they aren't smart about it they will lose it all.
The average millionaire hits bankrupt 3.2 times.
That means they've lost it all time and time again and make it right back to the top.
They put in the extra hours, learn all they can, and take the risks that the majority don't.
And that's why they are successful.
The only solution I could see would be to further educate the people.
Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

The Scandanavian countries don't have much poverty and have public medical care and all (better than our private care, even), but they are taxed somewhere around 60 to 75% of their annual income. For this reason those countries have a low amount of entrepreneurial capital - meaning nobody is going to take risks and try to make it big because there's no real benefit to doing so. A free market economy is the way to go - social democracy is a crock of shit. That way, the people with the ideas and the ones that take the risks are rewarded.
If only the libertarians would pick a candidate that wasn't completely nuts...

why do we need to get rid of poverty? Bums love being poor. You can see it in their eyes. I mean, its not for me but as long as they are happy. I saw this one bum, he was all dirty, sitting on the curb, drinking mouthwash, rocking back and forth and playing air guitar, screaming at no one in particular. he was having the time of his life. thats why I dont give to charity. cuz bums love being bums. normal people just dont understand that.

221, you are officially now the most ignorant and empatheticless person on the planet. Yeah, I am sure people LOVE having nothing, being cold and hungry all the time; enjoying the brutalities of our culture. What you might see if someone being joyful in what they have, not satisfaction.
And to paul, ghostdragon is right, it is a mindset, in general. poverty is a result of lack of ambition. But, poverty will always be a fact in the US especially where the immigrant population destroys the emmigration. Our population is forever swelling because of high childbirth and relaxed immigration laws; but no increase in jobs.
Best advice for you though for your paper: go online or to the library and find a couple of books or articles writting by historians or politians on the abolishment of poverty. You don't have to plagarize to use their ideas. They wrote those articles/books for a reason: they are brilliant men.

poor people for the most part started off just the same as rich/wealthy people
they are just lazy...
some people are content being left alone to watch oprah all day waiting for the third last banking day of the month to get the check. thats perfectly fine with me, more money for me... let america be what it really is.

Snonasty makes an interesting comment about Communism. If you look at the root of Communism, it is that everyone does there part, whatever it might be, and then everyone gets the same out of it. Therefore, those in a position to do more, do more, and those who can only do less, do less, and everyone gets an equal portion. Problem is that it is a great philosophy on paper, but because of peoples inherent greed (don't deny it, everyone one is greedy in some way) they expect more for doing more, therefore the basic principles of Communism are flawed.
As someone said above me in the thread, poverty often is based on a mindset and lack of ambition. As a society, we would need to find a way to motivate people to do well. Just look at the WelFare system in the US. People don't get off of Welfare because they are handed more money than they would be able to make (basically Welfare pays better than McDonalds). A lot of people want to get off of Welfare and Food Stamps and other Governmentally backed assistence, but they simply cannot afford to. Until these major flaws in the system are resolved, there will be no end to poverty (and I am not talking about homelessness here either, that is entirely a different subject - most homeless people want to work and do better for themselves, but often do not have applicable training, or are not able to provide a steady residence, thus preventing them from getting a job and getting off of the streets).
Im done my rant, sorry it was so long.

yeh not as long as the rich keep getting richer off the poor....and that the U.S gov't needs to stop giving welfare (not the type you think) to huge companies so they can help out the poor (well our idea of poor people)

there are always going to be a group of people that have very little compared to the general public. i just watched ABC and 17% of children is the usa are living in povery. 1 out of 8 americans live in poverty and we are the richest country in the world. this gets me mad. in sweden no one lives in poverty and it isnt that rich of a country. out government should be a little better

poor people can be lazy but lets not stereotype. some people just get fucked over. like all the enron employees. say you were young and had a family goin and kids to feed and your job was doin just fine for you. then your company goes bankrupt and and you get laid off and because of the low demand of your job field you cant find another one. doeant that suck?

I personally like the idea of socialism, and liberalism, but i have to look at it this way. Capitalism proved itself to advance society and technology more than communism, through one basic driving force: Greed. If there was no greed, we would have never launched into space, or developed computers, or most things like that. Basically because all of those wer used to achieve a global dominance and worldwide deterence.

i personally think that whole feed the world for a year thing is BS. You know that whole 'give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach him how to fish...' is cliched but true. But we havta deal with poverty on a large scale first, which means NO MORE FREE TRADE. Protectionism stimulates growth inside a country, mainly in industry. It will take time, and LOTS of money, but when that is done.

There's a difference between greed keeping what you rightfully worked hard for, who's to say who needs the money more? The fatass livin off welfare checks or the college student working 30 hours a week to struggle to pay for an appartment and a car and insurance and school and EVERYTHING ELSE

poverty could be erased if the world were to become a global polity and the quality of life was equal in all places, which cant happen, but the only way for a global polity to exist would be if you got rid of religion, which also cant happen just because people are weak

The only way to get rid of poverty is to get rid of greed. If we all loved each other equally then we would all help those who need it. Greed produces separation, those with, don't want to hang out with, those without. Why??? because it takes sacrifice. I can't go on a ski vacation to CO or Utah this year cause I can't afford to, but somebody who is going could bring me along and pay for me to go just to enjoy my company, just isn't going to happen. Why??? because those who could afford to take me don't want to, 'pay for your own damn self cause I've gotta buy some more stuff that is sold after eminate death'. I'm not a poor person I make a nice middleclass income, but I have to say I've become more lazy with the more I earn, when I was poor I worked my ass off many times working three jobs and sleeping a few hours every other day. Please don't call poor people lazy cause some of them are the hardest working folks in the world.

I believe Ghost Dragon raised the best points. The avg millionare goes banktrupt 3.2 times. They come back up on top because they understand how money works. If povery is a factor, very strong, or almost eliminated in every country. Elimination would be nearly impossible, and spreding the money would cause a loss of work ethic, thus eventually our economy would collapese, or we would slip into commumism. And we all know how good communism works! It looks great on paper, but doesn't generally work.

of course, there are exceptions. But its not exactly religion what they are fighting over, its LAND, religion only divided them into factions.
