Ok well i just got the JVC Everio MZ-G255 and im planning on doing some filming with it on Thursday, I know absolutely nothing about cameras but my friend will mostly be filming us all day since he is a camera freak. My question is, how will this bitch hold up in the cold?
Before you take the cam back in to a warm area, open up the tape deck and stick it up in a big pastic bag sealed off and leave it there for an hour a 2, it helps with condensation, otherwise your heads might get a little effed.
His camera has a hard drive rather than using tapes.
I'm guessing that's really what you're asking about, correct? I suspect that in nominally cold weather, it should be fine, but extreme cold can cause the bearing grease of the platter to stiffen up, which may cause read/write issues. But, it shouldn't cause any permanent damage. The hard drive itself should be hermetically sealed, meaning no risk of condensation on it.
only prob youll really have is the battery, when batteries get gold they loose thier charge, wich you might have noticed with like your cell phone or ipod. just make sure you charge it up, and bring a backup if you have one. only other thing is make sure you have the lens cap and keep it on when your not using it
I have a 4 hour battery that i usually keep warmed up in my pocket so thats not a real issue, I was just hoping that the cold wouldnt kill my hard drive. It should be around 30 on Thursday so i guess it wont be that cold, but just for future reference, thanks guys.
