So for a lot of you, you aready know the story from my other thread, but to those that dont, I refound out what christmas is all about. I work in the ER in a hospital in Salt Lake and about two to three weeks ago, we had a girl come in who had been in a severe car wreck. She was hit by a drunk driver going 65 in a 35 zone. The drunk asshole got away with just a few scrapes, but this girl completely severed her spinal cord as she broke her neck. I normally dont get involved personally with patients just because its too hard on me and there are so many of them, but as we were taking care of her for over 8 hours trying to save her life, I walked out of the trauma room and her mom was there sitting in a chair sobbing. I went over to console her and ended up getting into a deep conversation with her. I talked to her for over 45 minutes as she tried to come to grips with the fact that her daughter would never be able to move her body from the neck down. Keep in mind that she is 16 years old, like many of you on this site. Her mom is a single mother and is barely making ends meet. She had saved up for quite a while to get an iPod for her daughter since she had been wanting one for forever, but she soon realized that she wouldnt be able to afford the medical bills and still provide a christmas for her and her daughter. It kinda hit me hard. These people were some of the best people you could come across and both of their lives had turned to shit. I was thinking for the rest of my shift about what I could do and then it came to me. Go on NS and see if there was anyone that would be able to help me out and give her the iPod that she had been wanting and I could get several other things for her and her mom on my own. The response was intense. I got dozens of people that were willing to help out. Sanders (who deserves major props on this) donated his old nano, which was in immaculate condition. I bought some headphones that would work a little better for her to go along with the nano and I got a huge food basket and an hour massage gift certificate for her mom. When I took the stuff over to her place (I went with some of the daily care nurses that are still checking up on her) they couldn't believe it. They were so appreciative. Everyone was pretty moved by it all when the girl smiled her real smile for the first time since the accident. That was what christmas is really about. I just wanted to give you all the update and express my thanks to sanders and all the others that helped out. Merry Christmas you you guys and all of NS.
