Racers can't ski the mountain

I just read this article about Buck HIll in Minnesota. They have 600 vertical feet, yet they put out tons of pro racers. It makes me think that all racers know how to do is ski on perfectly set up courses or groomed runs. Think about the guys you see carving exactly the same size turn over and over and over down a regular run. oh well. go racer steeze!

not true at all.  You would be surprised how many pro skiers started out racing.  It gives you a great base  skill because skiing on ice is harder then skiing on anything else.

see im from a hill 20 min away from buck hill, and the thing with the midwest pumping out racers that are good is that our courses suck, and are super compressed and short, so if you mess up youre done, there is no room for error. and yeah 600ft is an exaggeration, but they did and a big mound of dirt to the top of it to give it 40 more ft or something like that

I hope you're kidding. As some guy mentioned above, most good skiers have a racing background. A lot of what you learn in racing can be applied all over, and it also teaches you how to adapt to various conditions.

Have a look at Jon Olsson. If you're telling me he can't ski...

it's ok everyone. you don't have to cry. but here's a kleenex just incase. it's the extra soft kind that won't hurt your fragile little noses.

Racing teaches skills that can be applied all over the mountain, but if the skills are only used on the course it seems gay to me.

Most good skiers got their start in racing, but progressed outside of the slalom course and into the real mountain.

it is up to you how you want to use those fundamentals ..

i think freeskiers r the most versatile people on the mountain but park rats atleast half of them dont no how to make the proper turn or carve or watev and racers can ski the mountain but groomers well ....bottom line the people that cant ski the mtn are the people that spend 100% of the day in the park and most of those kids are the kids wearing xxxxxxxxxl clothes becuase there is no way you can move around in something that big

Because this is about racers and the mountain.  I can tell you right now a good racer is a hell of a lot better off than a kid on center mounted skis dragging his hands behind him.  The truth doesn't need to be biased.  Park skiers are good at what they do, but it's not applicable to anything else unless they learn how to ski.  Racers and mogul skiers can apply their skills to almost any situation.

your wrong.  i competed in moguls for three years, and it was absolutely the best thing for my skiing, and i would assume racing is the same.

well it depends on what you consider skiing. some people belive that hitting rails and jumping is much more important than holding an edge or staying forward and stuff.

yes, but in this thread it's already been established that we're talking about skiing all over the mountain, ie: actual runs with crud snow, trees, steep slopes and other parts of skiing that dont exist in a perfectly grommed park.  People who only ski park generally have a harder time on the rest of the mountain than racers.

i see waaay to many "all mountain skiers" that can barely ski park but they can huck the same 10 foot "cliff" all day

seriously some kids at my mountain try to make you feel ashamed for skiing the park. You have no idea how many times i have heard  something like "why don't you try REAL skiing for abit"

xxxxxxxl clothes are easy to move around in....there is so much extra room...whats holding you back, but thats besides the point, if you take a kid who grew up racing and thats all he is about and put him at the top of a bump run, or any run thats steep and has variable terrain there is a 75% chance he isnt going to be comfortable skiing it, but that goes for everything, if you doing one aspect of skiing 100% of the timeyou arent going to be great at the rest of the mountain. the best skiers are those who dont limit themselves to the park the whole day, or gate bashing, you have to get out and experience it all. mogulist need not apply, they kinda kill it everywhere already ha

You are an idiot. Most racers are better "mountain" skiers than park rats from out east. Hell even most "pro" park skiers were racers first.

yeah same here, i think racing for sure helps people to become good skiers but racing is like being a park rat if you don't get off groomers or out of the park you won't be able to ski everything. Most of the racers i know are like this they may be just barely faster than me but if you take them into pow and tricky snow they suck.

Well saying "Look at all the pros! They used to be racers!" is a little biased. Yes most pros started out racing because freeskiing is a very new sport. Racing was MUCH more common back in the day when freeskiing was jsut starting, so yes, most people are going to be racers first, because that's all there was. They moved to freeskiing after it began and started progressing.
Also, I can sort of understand the whole "Park rats can't ski" thing. Yes I know there are kids that ski the park, and can't ski anywhere else. But they're shitty park skiers. It's hard to be good a park if you're not a skier first, but that doesn't mean you needed to be a racer. I started skiing like 6 years ago, and transfered over from snowboarding. I started skiing to freeski. Freeskiing led me to become a great skier. I can ski all over the mountain because I just learned to ski everywhere by skiing it. I bet as time moves on and freeskiing becomes older, there won't be anymore pros that grew us racing, because they will grow up freeskiing. It's all just because of the times.
