How do u set a handrail in the ground

i have a 15 foot handrail i wanna set up on a down, its got three, straight barrel legs

how can i secure it in the ground so that its hittable (ground is to hard to dig) (cement not an option)

my friend said i should put the feet in cinder blocks, then pile snow around the legs and dump like 3 gallons of water on till it ices...will this work?

if the blocks are wide enough....................

maybe build a different rail or somthing or a good base for the one you have

ive done it by screwing 2 x 2s to the legs so it cant tip, then icing and packing snow. there really low and get covered up with snow so u dont have to deal with falling of and landing on bricks cause that sucks

Y isnt cement an option cuz the best way would be to fill a paint bucket w/ cement and put the legs in then the thing will stand up and u can still move it around?

No it dont weigh that much u just need it on a couple of the legs and have the cement go mabey 5in up the bucket. That way u can move it into ur garage or whatever too.

But yeah, ice it over a lot, and you could attempt to drill a hole through a 2x4 and slipping the leg into it, with glue or something

my rail has small supports so i put in in the ground, covered the first and last support with cinder blocks, then covered the other supports with snow. then i poured water on the supports and it froze in a few minutes.

get rebar (big metal stakes) and drive them into the ground with a sledge hammer where the legs will be. thats what i did and it works fucking great, the rails dont even move.

Get a 4x4, get a big drill bit, size of the legs, drill like 6 or 7 inches staright down the 4x4, then through some ply wood on the bottom, like 3x3 ft squares, maybe after that take some big ass screws  and drill them though the plywood and into the ground, so it doesnt slide, you might want to trhough some other wood at angles from the ply wood to the 4x4 as well, just so its sturdy.

That will work, it might be hard to find a big enough drill bit though, but they do make them.

you might want to cut down the 4x4's so the rail isn't 4 feet off the ground only being supported by a plywood platform. I can see that working only if the legs of the rails are under a foot long. if you do have snow putting a bunch of snow on top of a 3x3 sheet of ply would secure it pretty good, especially if you added some bumpers around the edges of the 3x3 sheets so they wouldn't slide horizontally under the snow. also get some spikes (large nails) and hammer them through the plywood into the ground (you said it wasn't easy to dig, but a spike should be able to go through). if it's concrete you're pretty fucked for horizontal stability unless you got a lot of snow or a hammerdrill and some concrete clamps. (pretty excessive)

drill a hole through the metal with a drill bit slightly larger than the wood screw you plan to use. place two pieces of wood on either side of the hole, and drill a long wood screw through the hole, connecting the two pieces of wood. you'd need a pretty long screw and you'd have to do some matching to find the right lenght so that the tip of the screw isn't too deep (coming out the other side of the wood) or too shallow, but it'd work. put screws through both sides (drill two holes on top of each other). voila
